Volvo EX30 2026: New 148-hp engine and price cuts

Volvo is mounting a strategic offensive to reclaim the compact electric SUV segment. The Swedish automaker is unveiling a revamped Volvo EX30 for 2026 with an entry-level 148-horsepower motor, V2L technology, and a redesigned infotainment system. Meanwhile, Volvo is rolling out its largest software update ever, touching 2.5 million vehicles worldwide.
"We're bringing major improvements to our smallest premium electric SUV by enhancing the user experience and integrating new technologies" — Alexander Petrofski, Volvo Cars product lead
A new motor to democratize the EX30
Volvo is expanding the EX30 lineup with an unprecedented 148-horsepower electric motor positioned as the entry-level option. This new powertrain joins existing 268-hp and 428-hp versions, mounted on the rear axle to maintain the model's rear-drive philosophy.
The strategy appears to be working: in certain European markets like the Netherlands, this version starts at €32,995 with the 51-kWh battery for 211 miles of range. A version equipped with the larger 69-kWh battery delivers 296 miles of autonomy.
Erik Severinson, Volvo commercial director, explains that this new motor "broadens our addressable market and attracts more customers toward full electrification." A positioning that directly targets the Alfa Romeo Junior and Mini Aceman, two competitors struggling to find commercial momentum.
V2L transforms the EX30 into a mobile power station
The major innovation in this update is the integration of Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) technology. The EX30 can now power external devices via a separately sold adapter, turning its battery into a portable energy source.
This feature arrives via free software update in summer 2026. Current EX30 owners will automatically receive this capability without hardware modifications. Volvo confirms that "specific physical components aren't necessary—only the V2L adapter needs to be purchased."
The V2L proves particularly relevant against competitors. The Alfa Romeo Junior Elettrica doesn't offer this technology on its 154-hp and 276-hp Veloce versions. The Mini Aceman, still hedging its bets between electric and combustion according to reports, shows obvious technological lag.
An infotainment system finally worthy of the name
Volvo addresses one of the EX30's primary shortcomings: its infotainment ergonomics. The new interface promises restructured menus with shortcuts to most-used functions in a customizable toolbar.
This evolution responds to persistent criticism of the EX30, whose central touchscreen consolidates nearly all controls. Drivers can now access essential settings faster—a critical point when the Alfa Romeo Junior retains physical buttons for certain functions.
The improvement extends to 2.5 million Volvo vehicles running Android Automotive system. Models C40, XC40, EX40, EC40 and other references will benefit from this major update called Volvo Car UX.

Two new interior environments
Volvo enriches EX30 personalization with two new ambiances. The Harvest environment emphasizes light tones with recycled materials, while Charcoal adopts black Nordico upholstery for a bolder aesthetic.
These options complement existing environments, allowing Volvo to better segment its clientele. The EX30 Cross Country can now receive the P5 Long Range motor (rear-drive with extended battery), expanding its adventure credentials.
When will these updates arrive?
The EX30's software improvements are rolling out now via OTA (Over-The-Air) updates. The V2L technology will be deployed
