Volvo EX30 Axed in US, Cargo Version Launched, Huge Price Gaps in Europe

Volvo is stopping sales of the EX30 in the United States after just two years, a victim of import tariffs and a faltering electric vehicle market. The compact SUV continues to be sold in Canada, Mexico, and Europe, where it's now available as a Cargo version. Global price gaps reach a staggering €15,800 between Europe and China.

The news hit like a hammer blow: Volvo is ending sales of the EX30 in the United States after the 2026 model year. American dealers have until March 20, 2026 to place their final orders, before production for the US market stops for good this summer.
A Clear Commercial Failure Across the Pond
The numbers speak for themselves. With only 5,409 units sold in 2025, the EX30 represented less than 5% of Volvo's total US sales. A disappointing score for a model positioned as the Swedish brand's entry-level EV, starting at $40,345.
The sales slump accelerated after the federal $7,500 tax credit for electric vehicles was eliminated in September 2025. While 542 units found buyers in September, only 184 units were sold in October.
Tariff War and Strategic Repositioning
The Trump administration played a decisive role in this decision. Initially produced in China, the EX30 had already been hit by the 100% tariffs imposed by the Biden administration on Chinese EVs. Volvo then relocated production to its factory in Ghent, Belgium.
But the new 27.5% tariffs on European vehicles delivered the final blow. The starting price, initially planned to be under $35,000, climbed to over $46,000, transforming an entry-level vehicle into a mid-range product.
The EX30 Cargo: A New Professional Life
While the EX30 bows out across the Atlantic, Volvo UK is giving it a second life with the Cargo version. This utility variant removes the rear seats to offer 1,000 liters of cargo volume and a payload of 390 kg.
Available from £36,010, the EX30 Cargo can be configured with all trim levels (Core, Plus, Cross Country) and all powertrains, up to the 423 horsepower version capable of 0-100 km/h in 3.6 seconds. Enough to rival some sports cars while delivering IKEA furniture.
Staggering Global Price Gaps
The US exit contrasts with the EX30's global success, having become the best-selling electric vehicle in Volvo's history. But price disparities between markets reveal glaring inequalities.
In China, where Volvo just launched the 2026 model year, the EX30 Plus starts at just €20,000, which is €17,000 less than in Europe where the same version costs €37,000. The gap even reaches €15,800 for some configurations.
This difference is explained by local production at the Zhangjiakou plant, which avoids transport costs and import duties. Chinese buyers thus benefit from unbeatable prices for a premium SUV.
What Future for the Ghent Plant?
The US decision weakens the Belgian Ghent plant, which employed between 6,000 and 7,000 people and exported about one in five vehicles to the United States. Approximately 4,500 EX30s destined for the US market have been produced there since April 2025, representing one-fifth of the model's production at the site.
The plant remains active for other markets, however. In 2025, 212,177 vehicles rolled off the Ghent production lines, including 21,845 EX30s. Production is mainly focused on the XC40 and EX40 (156,977 units), supplemented by the V60 and EC40.
