The 2026 Volvo XC90 B6 Ultra is a large 7-seat SUV starting at $74,745 in the United States, powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged and electrically supercharged four-cylinder developing 295 horsepower. The 2026 model year carries over the updates introduced in 2025 — new headlights, revised grille, 11.2-inch screen — without shaking up a recipe that is now ten years old in this generation.

A Refreshed Design, But Still Recognizable

The 2026 XC90's bodywork hasn't undergone major surgery. Volvo updated the headlights, modified the front grille — Car and Driver describes it as "ready to burn momentum" — and slightly darkened the taillights. Visually, the offer is simple: the Aurora Silver paint, for example, takes on slightly lavender reflections depending on the light. And for no extra cost, the buyer can opt for black exterior trim instead of silver finishes on the grille, window surrounds, and door handles. Honestly, it looks better.

The 21-inch wheels are part of the standard equipment on the Ultra trim. That's a plus for looks, less so for comfort on rough roads — but then again, this is a European premium SUV, not an off-roader.

💡 Did you know?
The current XC90 has been in its second generation since 2015. In 2026, it will therefore celebrate its eleventh birthday with this same basic body — a record of longevity in the premium SUV segment.

Under the Hood: 295 HP and 0-60 in 6.7 Seconds

The B6 Ultra gets a 2.0-liter four-cylinder block equipped with a conventional turbo AND an electrically driven supercharger. This dual setup mainly serves to compensate for turbo lag at low revs — on paper, it's clever. In practice, Car and Driver reports a 0 to 60 mph in 6.7 seconds during track testing, which is decent for an SUV of this size and weight.

The comparison with the T8 PHEV is inevitable. The latter pushes 455 horsepower and is noticeably faster, but costs about $10,000 more. The B6 is therefore the choice for those who want the Ultra trim's equipment without going for the plug-in hybrid — and who don't need performance at all costs.

How Does the B6 Compare to the T8 PHEV?

The B6 Ultra starts at $74,745 in the United States in the configuration tested by Car and Driver. The XC90 T8 PHEV sits about $10,000 above that. For that differential, the T8 offers an extra 160 horsepower and an electric range that can lighten the fuel bill in daily use — but also additional technical complexity and, according to J.D. Power, a higher probability of problems. The B6 is therefore the compromise between high-end equipment and simpler mechanics.

A Scandinavian Interior with a Few Compromises

Inside, the atmosphere remains true to Volvo's identity: understated, well-finished, with quality materials. The front ventilated Charcoal Nappa leather seats are comfortable and offer good lateral support. The panoramic sunroof, head-up display, and Harman Kardon audio system are standard on the Ultra.

Two details stand out. First, the "Crystal Shifter" — the crystal gear selector, a nod to Scandinavian design — which makes a nice impression when you get in. Second, the start button: it's not a button you press, it's a button you twist. Surprising at first contact, but consistent with Volvo's approach of doing things differently.

💡 Technical Point
The XC90's gear selector is made of crystal, a characteristic element of Swedish design called the "Crystal Shifter." It references Scandinavian craft traditions, particularly Swedish crystal — a signature that Volvo retains on its premium models.
