The Porsche 911 doesn't need to reinvent itself to dominate. In 2026, it's making headlines for at least four reasons: a 911 Sport Classic 992 sold at auction for over $511,000 in the US—double its original price—a second 911 Dakar already spotted in winter testing, a Track Experience program expanding to Laguna Seca, and serious rumors about an even more exclusive sports car than the 911 in the works at Porsche. All against the backdrop of 75 years of motorsport to celebrate.

"It sold for double its original price: $511,000 instead of $283,000 in 2023, with less than 10,000 kilometers on the odometer." — Caradisiac, about the 911 Sport Classic 992

The 911 Sport Classic, or How to Double Your Investment in Four Years

The 911 Sport Classic from the 992 generation wasn't the most obvious 911 to buy at launch. When it came out in 2022, it cost €286,215—that's €85,000 more than a 911 Turbo S with 650 hp, even though it only churns out 543 hp from its 3.7-liter twin-turbo flat-six. The logic? A detuned Turbo engine, but rear-wheel drive only with a 7-speed manual gearbox. A sort of 930 brought up to date.

Purists hesitated. The market, on the other hand, didn't hesitate long.

One example with under 10,000 kilometers just sold on Bring A Trailer for $511,000. Twice its original price. According to Caradisiac, global production was limited to 1,250 units, which largely explains this surge in value. Sure, the US market has its quirks, and buyers there have a particular appetite for manual 911s. But it's still a clear signal: a well-chosen 911 is often a better investment than a savings account.

💡 Key Figure
The Porsche 911 Sport Classic 992 was limited to 1,250 units worldwide. With a manual gearbox and rear-wheel drive only, it's one of the rare modern 911s to combine a turbo engine with pure rear-wheel drive—a combo that's been missing since the 930 and 964.

A 911 Dakar Version 2 Already in the Starting Blocks

The 2,500 units of the first-gen 911 Dakar flew off the shelves despite a price tag north of €260,000. Porsche ended production in late 2024, and some owners even had time to complain about what they saw as disappointing performance. No matter: spy shots from Motor.es and CarBuzz published in late March 2026 show a prototype based on the 992.2 undergoing winter testing in northern Europe.

What's Changing on This New 911 Dakar?

The captured photos show a visibly raised ride height, turn signals integrated directly into the headlights, and a few detail differences on the air intakes. But the silhouette is still unmistakably a 911. According to Motor.es, the unveiling isn't expected until late 2027, with first deliveries before 2028. Porsche is taking its time to get it right—or at least to build anticipation.

💡 Did You Know?
The first 911 Dakar was only available in 2,500 units worldwide. The entire production found buyers despite a base price north of €260,000—a record for a non-GT series-production 911 at the time.

This year, Porsche Penske Motorsport is celebrating three anniversaries at once: 75 years of Porsche Motorsport, 60 years of Team Penske, and 30 years of partnership with Mobil 1. For the 2026 12 Hours of Sebring, the two Porsche 963s ran with a livery paying homage to the 1996 911 GT1—the first Porsche to sport Mobil 1 colors in competition.
