BYD Denza Z vs Porsche 911: The European-Chinese GT War

BYD launches its assault with the Denza Z, while Skoda retreats from China and Mercedes-AMG prepares its new GT Black Series for 2027. European brands are redefining their strategies in the face of increasingly aggressive Chinese competition.
"We want purists to say 'this is the car I want to drive,' even when faced with the Porsche 911" — Stella Li, BYD Vice President
BYD Challenges European Sports Cars with the Denza Z
The Chinese giant BYD is stepping up a gear with its premium brand Denza and its new Z coupé. This electric superdeportivo boasts 1,155 horsepower in its most powerful Chinese version, nearly 200 hp more than the European variant planned for 2027. Steer-by-wire and magnetic suspension will equip this direct response to the Porsche 911 and Mercedes-AMG GT.
The Denza Z will be unveiled at the Goodwood Festival of Speed this year. Its design clearly evokes the 911, but with a different technical approach. The three electric motors enable novel functions like "crab walk" or tank turns, impossible on a traditional combustion sports car.
Daniel Craig, BYD's New Secret Weapon
To seduce the European market, BYD has recruited Daniel Craig, the former James Bond, as global ambassador for Denza. The British actor fronts the international campaign covering Europe, Latin America, the Middle East, and Africa. The European launch of the Z9GT will take place at the Paris Opera on April 8th, orchestrated by Stella Li, the group's vice president.
This prestige strategy aims to make people forget the product's Chinese origin. The Denza Z was designed by Wolfgang Egger, former head of design at Audi and Lamborghini, to lend credibility to the brand's sporting ambitions.
At What Price the Denza Z?
No official pricing has been announced for the Denza Z. First deliveries are planned for 2027 in European markets, starting with the United Kingdom. The Z9GT shooting brake version, however, arrives this year with its 952 horsepower in the European configuration.
BYD is banking on its second-generation Blade Battery technology and its Flash Charging 2.0 system, theoretically capable of handling up to 1,500 kW. Enough to recharge the battery in record time, if the infrastructure can keep up.
Skoda Beats a Retreat, Heads to India
In contrast to the Chinese offensive, Skoda is throwing in the towel in China. The Volkswagen subsidiary will cease its operations in the Middle Kingdom by mid-2026, after years of disappointing sales. After-sales service will remain active for existing customers.
This retreat is explained by the rise of local Chinese brands and the market's electric shift. Skoda prefers to refocus on India, where it already has localized products and an industrial base. This withdrawal illustrates the growing difficulties Europeans face against BYD, Xiaomi, or Huawei.
Mercedes-AMG Brings Out the Heavy Artillery
Facing this Chinese pressure, Mercedes-AMG is preparing its counterattack with the future GT Black Series. Spy photos show a road-homologated racing beast, with a carbon fiber body and advanced aerodynamic work. The side exhausts and active air intakes betray the ambition for pure performance.
This Black Series will arrive before 2030 and aim for a new record at the Nürburgring. Mercedes is already booking exclusive slots on the German track to optimize the setup of this war machine. The goal: to demonstrate that European expertise still holds an edge in driving pleasure.
