Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series vs Porsche 911: V8 Power vs Proven Tradition

Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series vs Porsche 911: A duel of opposing philosophies between radical V8 power and proven excellence. Mercedes announces its most extreme Black Series, developed in parallel with the GT3 race car, while Porsche continues to exploit its legendary 911 on track and in rally.
"We are developing the most extreme Black Series in history, while simultaneously aiming to set the next record in motorsport with the future GT3." — Michael Schiebe, CEO Mercedes-AMG
In the world of radical sports cars, two German giants are clashing with completely opposing strategies. On one side, Mercedes-AMG is betting everything on a spectacular return of its Black Series lineup, promising a competition-spec V8 in a road-legal car. On the other, Porsche continues to refine its 911, a 60-year-old recipe that still works wonders on all terrains.
Mercedes Strikes Hard with the Next-Gen Black Series
The Stuttgart-based manufacturer is not holding back. The upcoming Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series is being developed in parallel with the racing GT3, an approach that guarantees a direct transfer of track technology to the road. Michael Schiebe, head of Mercedes-AMG, makes no secret of his ambitions: to break records and deliver the most extreme car in the brand's history.
This Black Series moves radically away from the current GT 63 models. Gone are the comfort compromises, replaced by a car sculpted for aerodynamic downforce and pure performance. The camouflaged prototypes spotted show a massive fixed rear wing, redesigned air intakes, and a prominent front splitter. Weight is expected to drop drastically compared to the 1950 kg of the current GT 63 S.
What Powertrain for this Black Series?
Mercedes-AMG is keeping the engine block a mystery. Two possibilities are emerging: a heavily evolved version of the current 4.0-liter V8 biturbo or the integration of a hybrid system akin to the GT 63 S E-Performance. The previous Black Series developed 720 hp thanks to a flat-plane crank V8, an architecture that could make a comeback.
The other enticing option would be to adapt the hybrid system with 831 hp from the E-Performance model, but in a lightweight version to match the track-focused spirit of the Black Series. The engineers in Affalterbach are keeping their cards close to their chest but promise to "push the limits" well beyond the 603 hp of the current GT 63 Pro.
Porsche Bets on the Evolution of its 911
Facing this German offensive, Porsche is playing the card of controlled evolution. The 911 continues its career with ever more focused variants. This is evidenced by the IronForce Racing project, which is transforming a 911 GT3 RS with a Manthey Racing MR kit for the 2026 24 Hours of Nürburgring.
Jan-Erik Slooten from the IronForce team explains they received unexpected support: "Everyone actively involved in this project fully supports us, including higher authorities like the ADAC." This near-production-spec 911 GT3 RS MR will challenge pure GT3 cars in endurance racing, proving the versatility of the Porsche architecture.
On Track, Mercedes Aims to Catch Porsche
Recent comparative tests give Mercedes an advantage in raw power. An AMG GT 63 S Pro weighing 1950 kg completed a test lap in 1:34.8, demonstrating formidable efficiency despite its weight. The standard carbon-ceramic braking system and all-wheel drive work wonders in exploiting the 603 hp.
But Porsche retains its strengths. The 911 GTS remains lighter, more agile, and above all benefits from an architecture proven over decades. At the Nürburgring, the temple of records, the two brands are engaged in a relentless war. Mercedes currently holds the record with the previous Black Series, but Porsche is preparing a counterattack with future, even more radical 911s.

When Will These New Models Arrive?
Mercedes-AMG is targeting a full reveal of its Black Series in spring 2026, with deliveries likely in late 2026 or early 2027. The price is expected to exceed €200,000, positioning the car against the Porsche 911 GT2 RS and other rivals like the McLaren 720S.
On the Porsche side, evolution continues with ever more focused versions of the 911. The May 2026 24 Hours of Nürburgring will serve as a technological showcase, while new GT variants regularly join the catalog.
