MG4 X: MG's New Compact Electric SUV Revealed in China

MG Motor is expanding the 4 family with a new SUV electric called the MG 4X. This compact model, measuring 4.50 meters, adopts the E3 platform from the MG4 Urban and offers two power levels: 125 and 150 kW. It will be officially unveiled at the Beijing Auto China show in late April.

This newcomer takes a different approach: where previous models focused on sedan-like dynamism, the 4X prioritizes SUV versatility.

Chinese homologation documents reveal generous dimensions for a compact SUV: 4.50 meters long, 1.85 meters wide, and 1.62 meters high. Its wheelbase of 2.74 meters suggests a spacious cabin. Weight varies between 1,640 and 1,755 kg depending on the version, figures consistent with its category.

Design: A Clear Family Resemblance

Visually, the MG 4X picks up the stylistic cues that made its cousins successful. The front end features a lit-up logo accompanied by an LED light bar that runs the full width. This lighting signature is becoming a distinctive element of MG's electric range.

In profile, the silhouette immediately betrays its SUV vocation with a raised ground clearance and a taller stance. The 18-inch wheels reinforce its dynamic look while maintaining the brand's inherent elegance. The rear follows the principle of the full-width light bar, creating consistency with the rest of the range.

Details evolve compared to other family models. The door handles abandon the flush system for a classic format, an evolution dictated by new Chinese market standards. A sunroof will be on the options list.

Two Electric Motor Options

On the technical side, MG offers two powertrain configurations. The entry-level version features a permanent magnet synchronous motor developing 125 kW (170 hp). A more muscular version climbs to 150 kW (204 hp), offering more punch for driving enthusiasts.

This front-wheel-drive architecture frees up space in the cabin and simplifies the vehicle's design. The choice of the E3 platform over the original MG4's MSP is explained by this desire to prioritize habitability and production costs.

An Innovative Semi-Solid Battery

The major innovation of the MG 4X lies in its optional semi-solid battery. This manganese-based technology contains only 5% liquid electrolyte, compared to nearly 100% in conventional batteries. This composition improves thermal stability and performance in cold weather, two traditional weak points of electric vehicles.

The announced range reaches 510 km according to the Chinese CLTC cycle, which is more optimistic than European standards. Conventional LFP batteries will remain available for tighter budgets, although their capacities have not been revealed.

When Will It Be Available?

The MG 4X will be officially unveiled at the Beijing Auto China show starting in late April. MG Motor developed this model for global markets, raising hopes for a European launch in the following months. No precise date has been announced for France, but MG's strategy typically involves launching its new products first in China before deploying them in Europe.

The manufacturer thus continues its move upmarket with the MG4 family, which now has three distinct variants. This strategy allows for a wide net: sporty sedan with the classic MG4, practical city car with the MG4 Urban, and versatile SUV with this new 4X.
