MG4 Facelift & Urban: MG's Aggressive EV Pricing Strategy

794 words4 min readBy Sophie Renard

MG is making a bold move in the compact electric segment with a dual launch: the facelifted MG4 starting at €27,490 after a discount and the MG4 Urban under the €20,000 threshold. The Chinese brand is betting on an ultra-aggressive pricing strategy to shake up the competition, from the Renault 5 E-Tech to established German references in the segment.

"With 100,000 customers already won over in France, MG confirms its strategy: to make electric vehicles not a luxury, but a concrete solution for all households" — According to MG Motor France

A Two-Pronged Strategy to Conquer the Market

MG is not holding back for 2026. The manufacturer is deploying two versions of its MG4 simultaneously, each targeting a different audience. On one side, the facelifted MG4 moves upmarket with a transformed interior and an immediate €6,000 discount that brings the starting price down to €27,490. On the other, the MG4 Urban literally slashes prices to €19,990 as a launch offer until June 30, 2026.

This two-pronged approach is explained by a desire to cast a wide net. The Urban version, paradoxically 10 cm longer than the classic MG4 at 4.39 m, targets families looking for space without blowing the budget. The facelifted MG4, meanwhile, aims at a clientele willing to pay a little more for a higher level of equipment.

The MG4 Urban features Cell-to-Body technology where the battery is an integral part of the chassis structure, optimizing both rigidity and interior space.

LFP Batteries to Democratize Electric Mobility

Both models share a common technical philosophy: the use of LFP batteries (Lithium-Iron-Phosphate). This technology, less expensive than traditional NMC batteries, allows for aggressive pricing while guaranteeing superior durability. For the MG4 Urban, two capacities are available: 43 kWh for 325 km of range and 54 kWh for 416 km WLTP.

The facelifted MG4, for its part, starts with a 64 kWh battery and 190 hp for 452 km of range. A 77 kWh version pushes the range to 545 km with 245 hp, while the XPower retains its 64 kWh/435 hp configuration for a 0 to 100 km/h sprint in 3.8 seconds.

A Transformed Interior for the Facelifted MG4

The most significant evolution for the 2026 MG4 concerns the interior. The dashboard, borrowed from the MG5 EV, marks a clear step forward in perceived quality. The central 12.8-inch screen becomes standard, accompanied by a 7-inch digital instrument cluster. The gear selector has migrated to the steering column, freeing up valuable space on the center console.

This evolution testifies to MG's growing maturity. The materials improve, the ergonomics are refined, and the whole gains in coherence. A notable point: Apple CarPlay and Android Auto now work wirelessly from the Comfort trim level.

💡 Technical Point
The fast charging of the 77 kWh version allows going from 10 to 80% in just 25 minutes, compared to 28 minutes for the 64 kWh version of the MG4 Urban.

The MG4 Urban: Larger but Cheaper

A deliberate paradox of this offensive, the MG4 Urban measures 4.39 m compared to 4.29 m for the classic MG4, while displaying a lower price. This difference in length translates into a wheelbase extended to 2.75 m (+4 cm), which directly benefits rear passengers. Legroom reaches 984 mm and the trunk offers 480 liters, with 98 liters under the floor.

This spatial generosity places the MG4 Urban in direct competition with models like the Peugeot e-308 or the Kia EV4, but at a city car price. An equation that could reshuffle the deck in the segment, especially since MG hasn't skimped on standard equipment: 7 airbags, 5-star Euro NCAP rating, and the ADAS 3.0 suite of driving aids.

What Strategy Against the French Eco-Bonus?

Ineligibility for the French eco-bonus does not deter MG, which compensates with direct discounts. The strategy is risky but coherent: rather than suffer the distrust linked to its Chinese origin, the brand embraces it and bets everything on pricing attractiveness.
