The Discovery 2026 welcomes two new premium versions: Tempest and Gemini. These special editions mark the 35th anniversary of the range and introduce more powerful engines, including a 355-horsepower 6-cylinder. Prices start at $72,650 for the Gemini version.

"The Tempest is the most luxurious, comfortable, and best-equipped Discovery ever conceived" — Land Rover (which apparently never drove a Range Rover Sport)

Land Rover adds two finishes to help forget the Discovery's age

After nine years of faithful service, the Discovery 2026 finally gets a fresh coat of paint with two new premium trims. The Tempest and Gemini top a range that desperately needed the refresh to keep pace against BMW X7 and Mercedes GLS. These versions mark the 35th anniversary of the range — and conveniently allow Land Rover to justify higher prices.

The Tempest plays the luxury card with exclusive colors Charente Grey, Carpathian Grey, or Varesine Blue. The Petra Copper Gloss contrasting roof (translation: shiny copper) and 22-inch black wheels with copper accents deliver a less consensus-driven style than usual. Ambient lighting that projects the emblem on the ground feels very German premium — finally.

The Gemini, at $72,650, takes a more conservative approach. Six colors on the menu including the exclusive Sedona Red. The Narvik black roof (a Scandinavian name for trendiness) contrasts with the body, while Atlas glossy finishes replace the Tempest's copper accents. 21-inch wheels and hexagonal lighting complete the package — less flashy, more marketable.

💡 Did you know?
The Discovery hasn't evolved much since its 2017 launch. This generation is therefore reaching maturity after nearly a decade of service.

A 6-cylinder that finally changes the game

Good news: Tempest and Gemini trims ditch the wheezy 4-cylinder for a proper engine befitting a premium SUV. This 3.0-liter turbocharged six with 48-volt mild hybridization (comfort electrification) develops 355 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque. On paper, that's 59 horses more than the 4-cylinder base versions — in the real world, it changes everything.

Car and Driver's numbers confirm it: the Gemini dispatches 0-60 mph in 6.6 seconds. Honest for a behemoth weighing 5,673 lbs — about the weight of a 1990 Clio multiplied by three. The Lexus GX does better at 6.2 seconds, the Audi Q7 stretches it to 5.9 seconds. Discovery pays the price for old-school construction and excess weight.

The 8-speed ZF automatic transmission (Land Rover-tuned) and standard all-wheel drive are naturally included. The gearbox prioritizes comfort over responsiveness — consistent with the positioning.

The interior finally catches up

Gone is the hard plastic that felt cheap on older versions. The Tempest bets everything on Ebony Windsor leather (premium black), Shadow aluminum trim, and independent rear climate control. Door sill engravings and a front refrigerated compartment round out the luxury arsenal — details that matter at this price point.

The Gemini repeats the formula with quad-zone climate control to keep the whole family happy. Both versions retain the standard 7-seat configuration with a third row that remains symbolic for adults. The 13.1-inch central display and digital instrument cluster follow recent Land Rover codes — finally a 21st-century interface.

💡 Technical note
All 2026 Discovery models benefit from an enlarged 13.1-inch central screen with updated software compared to previous versions.

Reality check against German rivals

The Discovery 2026 faces seasoned competitors. The BMW X7, Mercedes GLS, and even the Cadillac Escalade outclass the Brit in pure performance and road refinement. Discovery leans on its off-road credentials — an argument that convinces only 5% of real-world buyers.

The numbers speak for themselves: the Lexus GX weighs 330 lbs less and is quicker. The Audi Q7 saves 540 lbs on the scale
