Land Rover Reinvents Itself: Electric Defender Sport 2027, OCTA Black, Freelander Return

JLR is preparing a 100% electric Defender Sport for 2027, while the current lineup gains an OCTA Black version and the brand revives the Freelander name for a whole new positioning. The 4x4 SUV segment has never been more turbulent, with Chinese challengers like the Denza B5 arriving with 677 hp and a ladder-frame PHEV architecture, squarely in the Defender's territory.

Defender Sport: The Electric Baby Arrives in 2027
Land Rover has been working on a compact electric Defender for several years. According to CarBuzz and Auto Express, this model, dubbed Defender Sport, should hit the market sometime in 2027, with a boxy design true to the family's DNA — vertical lines, flared wheel arches, a rugged look. Prototype photos show slimmer LED headlights and black lower body panels, suggesting a result consistent with the rest of the range.
The platform would be dedicated to electric power, allowing better interior space optimization than a converted thermal base. According to rouleur-electrique.fr, the pricing would be "significantly more accessible" than the current thermal version — though no specific figures are confirmed at this stage.
Starting Price for the Defender Sport EV?
That's the burning question. Rouleur-electrique.fr hints at an "accessible" positioning relative to the current Defender's €70,000 — which could place the entry-level around €50,000 to €65,000, but no official figures have been released by JLR. The direct competition will be fierce: BMW X3, Mercedes GLC electrics, and other Audi Q5 e-tron models all hover in this price range. Land Rover will have to convince buyers it justifies a premium through real off-road capabilities, not just its badge.
The OCTA Black: When the Defender Becomes a Mud Supercar
While waiting for the electric baby, Land Rover has released an OCTA Black version of the Defender for 2026, a limited variant of the range's most radical trim. Auto Express describes it as an SUV capable of "school drop-off like a track day," with notable cosmetic tweaks: new headlight housing, tinted flush taillights, and a 13.1-inch touchscreen. The Land Rover logo now only remains on the grille.
On the road, the OCTA Black impresses — Auto Express calls it a "true gem of a performance SUV." The catch: to get the best out of it, they recommend fitting all-season tires rather than the stock rubber. On an SUV costing over €100,000, that's worth noting.

Freelander: The Surprise Return of a Legendary Name
JLR isn't stopping there. According to L'Auto Journal, the group is reviving the Freelander name, but forget the small, accessible SUV from the 2000s. The new Freelander will be a standalone brand, targeting primarily China, with vehicles over 5 meters long, 6 seats, and electric powertrains including range-extender versions. High-end, imposing, 4x4.
Sales will begin in China, with no specific date for a potential arrival in Europe. JLR has already restructured its activities around three pillars — Defender, Range Rover, and Discovery — and Freelander grafts on as a fourth distinct entity, tailored to the Chinese market's demands.
