Audi and Volkswagen are unveiling their aggressive, budget-friendly electric offensive. The Audi A2 e-tron will launch in autumn 2026 for under £30,000 (around €35,000), while Volkswagen is preparing the ID. Cross for the same period at €28,000. These two premium electric compacts aim to democratize access to zero-emission mobility.

"The A2 e-tron is our promise to deliver exactly what our customers want: efficient, compact, and confident. We are making access to the Audi electric universe easier and more relevant than ever." — Gernot Döllner, CEO Audi

The A2 Returns After a 21-Year Absence

Audi is officially bringing back the A2, gone since 2005. This electric compact revives the original's codes: aerodynamic shape, lightweight architecture, and maximum efficiency. The new model will be produced in Ingolstadt, the brand's historic home.

The first sketch reveals a silhouette faithful to the spirit of the original A2 with its steeply raked windscreen, smooth flanks, and integrated spoiler in the rear window. This "one-box" approach maximizes interior space while optimizing aerodynamics.

💡 Did you know?
The original Audi A2 (1999-2005) was built from aluminum and consumed only 2.99 liters per 100 km in the 1.2 TDI version, a record for its time.

Proven Tech Base with the MEB+ Platform

The A2 e-tron will be based on Volkswagen's MEB+ platform, an evolved version of the architecture already underpinning the ID.3. This technical base allows for a 400-volt architecture and a potential range of over 400 km WLTP, exceeding the 352 km of the current ID.3.

Unlike other Audi EVs based on the 800-volt PPE platform, this technical choice helps contain costs. The A2 e-tron thus shares its mechanics with its Volkswagen cousin but adopts a distinct premium style and positioning.

Volkswagen Counterattacks with the ID. Cross

Meanwhile, Volkswagen is preparing the ID. Cross, a compact electric SUV spotted camouflaged on the streets of Amsterdam. Starting from €28,000, it will be unveiled in autumn 2026, a few months after the A2 e-tron.

The ID. Cross targets the same segment as the A2 but with a more conventional SUV positioning. This strategy allows the Volkswagen Group to cover two approaches: premium with Audi and volume with Volkswagen.

💡 Key Figure
The Volkswagen Group is investing €180 billion by 2030 in electrification, 50% more than initially planned.

The ID.3 Neo Marks a New Step

In parallel, Volkswagen is launching the ID.3 Neo in April 2026. This facelifted version integrates Travel Assist with traffic light recognition and One Pedal Driving. These new features will also arrive on the ID.4, ID.5, and ID.7.

What Price for These Electric Compacts?

The A2 e-tron will start under £30,000 according to Autocar, or about €35,000. A positioning that pits it against the Renault Scénic E-Tech (€35,390) and above the Kia EV3 (expected at €32,000).

The Volkswagen ID. Cross attacks lower at €28,000, directly rivaling the Citroën ë-C3 (€23,300) and the future Renault 4 E-Tech. This price war demonstrates the accelerated democratization of electric vehicles.

💡 Technical Point
The MEB+ platform allows for a 50/50 weight distribution between front and rear thanks to the battery placed in the floor.

When Will They Be Available?

Both models arrive in autumn 2026. The A2 e-tron will be unveiled first, likely at the Paris Motor Show in October 2026. The ID. Cross will follow shortly after for orders by year-end.

This coordinated strategy illustrates the Volkswagen Group's maturity in the electric space. After the software woes of the first ID models, the brand is betting on proven technologies and attractive prices to win back customers.

These two electric compacts mark a turning point: access to premium zero-emission mobility is finally dropping below the symbolic €30,000 mark. This should accelerate EV adoption in Europe, where this segment represents 40% of new car sales.

[FAQ]

Will the Audi A2 e-tron really be affordable?

With an announced price under €35,000, the A2 e-tron remains more expensive than popular EVs but becomes the most accessible Audi electric. It positions itself in the accessible premium segment.

What range for these new compacts?

The A2 e-tron could exceed 400 km WLTP thanks to its optimized aerodynamics. The ID. Cross should display a range similar to the current ID.3, around 420 km depending on the battery chosen.
