Volkswagen Hits 2 Million EVs, Refreshes ID Lineup

Volkswagen has just delivered its two millionth electric vehicle — an ID.3 from the Zwickau plant, handed over to its owner at the Dresden Glass Manufactory. The counter has been running since 2013 and the launch of the e-up!, and the brand is taking the opportunity to announce an update for its entire ID. range, including a heavily revised version of the ID.3 that is even changing its name.
"Two million all-electric vehicles — and the ID.4 alone accounts for 901,000 units, almost half of the total." — Martin Sander, Volkswagen Board Member for Sales
ID.4 Leads, ID.3 as the Foundation
The 2 million units don't tell a uniform story. The ID.4 dominates with 901,000 units delivered since 2021, a figure that includes the ID.5 (the coupé version). This SUV is the only model in the range to have broken through simultaneously in Germany, China, and the United States — making it the real commercial engine of Wolfsburg's electric strategy.
The ID.3 follows with 628,000 units since its launch in 2020. The first model built on the MEB platform (Modularer E-Antriebs-Baukasten), it had a complicated start — the software problems at launch are still remembered. The compact car later found its rhythm, even if it never reached the initial commercial targets.
The ID.7 brings up the rear with 132,000 units since 2023, sedan and Tourer wagon combined. Volumes consistent with the segment: family sedans have been retreating everywhere in Europe in the face of SUVs for years.
What the e-up! Hides in the Count
Thirteen years to reach 2 million, versus over 2 million 100% electric vehicles sold by BYD in a single year. CleanTechnica points it out bluntly. The figure is respectable for a mainstream European brand, but it helps put VW's supposed lead into perspective.
The count includes the e-up! (launched in 2013, range of 260 km with a battery of 32.3 kWh — it was already complicated) and the e-Golf, models whose volumes have largely inflated the total. The ID. family proper therefore represents significantly less than the 2 million announced in the headline.
The ID.3 Neo: More Than a Facelift, Less Than a New Car
This is where it gets interesting. Volkswagen announced that the ID.3 will change its name to become the ID.3 Neo, with a world premiere scheduled for mid-April 2026. The name "Neo" didn't come out of nowhere: it was the internal project code name from the start.
What Are the Concrete Changes for the ID.3 Neo?
Externally, the front end is redesigned — reworked headlights, lowered grille, a more assertive light strip. The tailgate, previously painted black, now matches the body color. Inside, the new Innovision system arrives, with an integrated app store for streaming, charging, parking. One-pedal driving makes its appearance, as does the V2L function (Vehicle-to-Load, for powering external devices), and a digital key usable via smartphone or smartwatch. Physical buttons return to the steering wheel — a recurring user request for years. Kai Grünitz, VW's technical director, speaks of "more performance and a better customer experience" thanks to the new software, already deployed on the ID.4, ID.5, and ID.7.

This is not a new generation. The MEB platform remains, the silhouette is recognizable. The manufacturer itself speaks of a "successor" but the sketches leave no doubt: it's a deep facelift, justified in part by the delay of the SSP platform on which the ID. Golf was supposed to be based.
ID.4, ID.5, and ID.7 Also Updated
Parallel to the ID.3 Neo, Volkswagen is updating the ID.4, ID.5, and ID.7 already in the catalog. The Innovision system is integrated as standard on all units ordered since March 12th. Those already delivered cannot be retrofitted — which is likely to frustrate some recent owners.

These three models also gain physical buttons on the steering wheel (goodbye to the controversial haptic pads), the digital key, and an enhanced version of Travel Assist with traffic light detection.
