Volkswagen Golf 9: First Official Images of the Future Electric Generation

On March 4, 2026, during an internal meeting in Wolfsburg, Volkswagen showed the silhouette of the Golf 9 for the first time. A discreet teaser, an almost blurry image, but enough to understand the direction they're taking. The future generation will be electric, named the ID. Golf, produced in Wolfsburg and expected for 2028. In the meantime, the current Golf 8 is still holding its own with its GTI and R variants.
"The Golf is an integral part of the city, the factory, the brand, and the group. That is precisely why the Golf will remain a Wolfsburg car for its ninth generation." — Daniela Cavallo, Chairwoman of the Volkswagen Works Council
A Silhouette That Surprises No One — And That's the Point
The IG Metall union shared the image during this company meeting. And honestly, no shock here. The Golf 9 looks like the Golf 8, which itself looked a lot like the Golf 7. Same roofline, same hatchback angle, same calculated discretion.
This is exactly the lesson VW learned from the ID.3. The brand tried a radically different silhouette for its first electric compact. The market greeted it with polite enthusiasm. Since then, Andreas Mindt, Volkswagen's design chief, has been playing the continuity card. According to Autocar, he even cites the Golf 7 as the absolute reference: "The Mk7 is kind of a masterpiece, because it resembles all the best elements from history, but it's still a fresh design."
According to Carscoops, the image's filename already reveals the official name: ID. Golf. The strategy of attaching iconic models to the ID family, started with the ID. Polo, is therefore confirmed.
What the Silhouette Reveals Technically
The shadowy image isn't without clues. Autocar notes that the wheels seem more widely spaced than on the Golf 8. This detail is explained by the SSP (Scalable Systems Platform) on which the electric version will be built. This architecture, wider at its base, frees up interior space — a welcome advantage for a compact.
The rear also appears more vertical, with a more pronounced roof spoiler. Aerodynamic tweaks that are anything but trivial on an electric car where every point of drag coefficient directly translates into extra kilometers of range. The front end seems more angular, with Carscoops and L'Auto Journal even mentioning references to the Golf 3 and the Corrado coupe from the 1990s.
For the interior, VW is taking note of the criticism of the Golf 8 and its excess of touch controls. According to Motor1, physical buttons will make a comeback on the steering wheel and center console. A retro mode for the digital dashboard is also reportedly in the works — already present in the ID. Polo under development.
📋 Fiche technique
When Will the Golf 9 Be Available?
Sources differ slightly but converge around 2028. Autocar and Motor1 mention 2028, while Caradisiac and some other sources mention a window between 2028 and 2030 for market launch. Production in Wolfsburg could start in 2027, with a few months of ramp-up before the first customer deliveries. For the technical architecture, the electric Golf 9 will bet on an 800V architecture, which will allow significantly faster charging than the current generation.
