Mercedes-AMG GT63 Pro vs BMW M5: 2025 Performance Sedan Showdown

The new Mercedes-AMG GT63 Pro dominates on track with 603 horsepower and a 2:46.9 Lightning Lap 2026 time. Up against it, the BMW M5 Touring boasts 717 horsepower but tips the scales at 5,477 pounds. Among compacts, the Volkswagen Golf GTI sets a new record with 3:11.3 while the Toyota GR Corolla disappoints at 3:07.1.
"The Pro pulled 1.12 g's in Turn 1, a 0.05-g improvement and right up there with this year's best" — Car and Driver, test Lightning Lap 2026
Mercedes-AMG GT63 Pro: The Circuit Queen
The Mercedes-AMG GT63 Pro has just achieved a 2:46.9 time at the legendary Lightning Lap 2026—eight-tenths quicker than last year's standard version. Its 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 now produces 603 horsepower (+26 hp) and 627 lb-ft of torque (+37 lb-ft). These power gains come alongside major technical refinements: carbon-ceramic brakes standard, new calipers and pads with titanium backing plates.
Weight remains a challenge at 4,268 pounds—33 pounds heavier than the base model due to liquid-cooled differentials and transfer case. Yet this mass doesn't hamper performance: 1.12 g through Turn 1, an average speed of 124.8 mph in the Climbing Esses, and a two-mph faster corner exit.
BMW M5 Touring: The 717-Horsepower Heavyweight
Heavier than all competitors at 5,477 pounds, the BMW M5 Touring compensates with raw muscle: 717 horsepower. Its hybrid system pairs a 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V8 producing 577 hp with a 194-hp electric motor. The result on track: 2:55.0 at Lightning Lap—eight seconds behind the Mercedes.

Despite this considerable mass, the M5 Touring reaches 156.5 mph on the straights and pulls 1.03 g in the first turn thanks to Michelin Pilot Sport S5 high-load tires. Optional carbon-ceramic brakes ($8,500) prove necessary to haul this beast down from 150.7 mph on the back straight.
Volkswagen Golf GTI: The Compact Surprise
What's the Golf GTI's Lightning Lap time?
The Volkswagen Golf GTI 2025 has just set a personal best with 3:11.3, beating all previous times despite the loss of the manual gearbox. Its 7-speed DSG and 241 horsepower edge out even the old manual version by a tenth.
The 2.0 TSI engine delivers a 13.6 lb/hp power-to-weight ratio across a 3,285-pound chassis. Hankook Ventus S1 evo3 tires in 235/35R-19 provide consistent grip, but brakes show their limits after a hot lap. At 118.7 mph on the back straight, stopping demands anticipation.
Toyota GR Corolla: The Japanese Letdown
Expected to impress, the Toyota GR Corolla with automatic transmission disappoints at 3:07.1—more than four seconds behind the old Morizo Edition manual. Its 300 horsepower and 3,339 pounds offer an excellent 11.1 lb/hp ratio on paper.
The problem stems from the conventional 8-speed automatic—slow on gear changes with a narrow optimal rev range. The cooling system also has limits: an "AWD System Overheated" warning forces a switch to 2WD after a few hard laps.
How does the Golf stack up against premium wagons?
Unsurprisingly, the AMG GT63 Pro and M5 Touring operate in a different realm than the compacts. Their 2:46.9 and 2:55.0 times remain beyond reach for the Golf GTI (3:11.3) and GR Corolla (3:07.1), but price scales accordingly: $42,750 for the VW versus over $200,000 for the Mercedes.
