Volkswagen is launching a multi-front offensive in 2026 with the new facelifted Multivan and a recall campaign affecting nearly 100,000 MEB electric vehicles. The German brand reveals the first details of the upcoming refreshed Multivan T7, expected by the end of the year, while owners of ID.3, ID.4, ID.5, ID.Buzz, and Cupra Born models manufactured between February 2022 and August 2024 are invited to dealerships for a battery module inspection.

A Massive Recall Affecting 94,000 Electric Vehicles

Volkswagen is facing one of its largest recalls since the launch of its ID electric lineup. 94,031 vehicles are affected in total: 74,579 Volkswagen models (ID.3, ID.4, ID.5, ID.Buzz, and ID.Buzz Cargo) and 19,452 Cupra Born. The production period spans over two years, from February 7, 2022, to August 23, 2024.

💡 Key Figure
On the German market, 22,182 Volkswagen vehicles and 5,976 Cupra Born are affected by this recall campaign.

The identified issue concerns high-voltage battery modules that do not meet the manufacturer's specifications. This anomaly can cause a reduction in range and trigger a yellow warning light on the dashboard. More concerning, the authorities mention a "fire risk" in their official database.

The good news: no material damage or personal injury incidents have been reported. The defect was detected during internal checks at Volkswagen, suggesting the brand identified the problem before it could affect customers on the road.

What is the Repair Procedure?

The intervention planned by Volkswagen combines a software update and a physical inspection of the components. Technicians will inspect each battery module in the workshop. Faulty elements will be replaced free of charge. Affected owners will receive a letter from the manufacturer with the procedure details.

To check if your vehicle is affected, Volkswagen provides an online service where you simply need to enter the vehicle's VIN number. This check is available separately for Volkswagen and Cupra models.

The New 2027 Multivan Partially Revealed

Alongside this recall campaign, Volkswagen presents the first visual elements of the facelifted Multivan T7, expected for late 2026. The front end evolves noticeably with larger headlights and a new light signature that extends across the entire width.

The design clearly draws inspiration from the ID. Buzz, particularly in the front grille now divided into two distinct sections. The air intakes abandon the honeycomb pattern of the current version for a more conventional and robust approach.

💡 Did You Know?
The current Multivan T7 is built on the MQB Evo platform, the same base as the Golf, and no longer on a commercial vehicle architecture like its predecessors.

Regarding colors, Volkswagen introduces three new two-tone combinations including a Candy White and Grey Brown metallic assembly. For the first time, a matte finish will be offered directly from the factory. The wheel range is also expanding with six new designs in 17 and 18 inches, plus the slightly revised 19-inch "Halmstadt" wheels.

Interior Changes Still Under Wraps

Volkswagen remains discreet about the interior updates for the new Multivan. The brand mentions "many other updates" without giving details. Observers expect a revision of the infotainment system, aligned with the improvements made to the Golf, Tiguan, and ID.3.

The Multivan will retain its standard and long wheelbase configurations, as well as the choice between gasoline, diesel, and plug-in hybrid powertrains. According to Dutch sources, this PHEV version remains the only one available in the Netherlands.
