Volkswagen Golf GTI: 50 Years of History, Wild Concepts, and an Electric Future

The Golf GTI turns 50 in 2026 with the Edition 50 — 325 hp, front-wheel drive, and a Nürburgring record of 7'46"125. While we celebrate the most radical production petrol version ever, Volkswagen dusts off its craziest concepts and is already preparing the electric Golf 9 for the 2030s.
"This Golf drives, and it drives very fast — a Golf capable of supercar performance in a familiar silhouette." — Mobiwisy, on the GTI W12-650
The W12-650: When Volkswagen Put a Bentley Engine in a Golf
It was 2007, at the GTI festival in Wörthersee, Austria. Volkswagen showed up with something you don't often see under a Golf's hood: a 6.0-liter twin-turbo W12 engine borrowed from the Bentley Continental GT, developing 650 hp and 750 Nm of torque. Obvious problem — you don't fit that kind of monster under the hood of a compact. No matter: the engineers hid it in a mid-rear position, turning the Golf into a mid-engine, rear-wheel-drive car.

Result: 0 to 100 km/h in 3.7 seconds, top speed of 325 km/h. The chassis was widened by 160 mm, lowered by 70 mm, with front brakes from an Audi RS4 and a rear axle borrowed from the Lamborghini Gallardo. A Golf that's only a Golf in name. This one-off show car was never meant for sale — obviously — but Volkswagen revived it for the GTI's 50th anniversary, restored and repainted in Tornado Red, with a series of photos and videos published on its social media.
The GTI Roadster: Born in a PlayStation, Built for Wörthersee
In 2013, Sony celebrated 15 years of Gran Turismo and launched the Vision Gran Turismo program — an invitation for manufacturers to imagine virtual cars without production constraints. Kazunori Yamauchi, creator of the franchise and himself a Golf GTI owner, chose Volkswagen. An internal competition was launched, the winning project selected by Klaus Bischoff, then head of design for the brand.
The GTI Roadster Vision Gran Turismo first appeared in Gran Turismo 6 in 2014, downloadable on PlayStation 3. Volkswagen then decided to materialize the madness by building a real concept. Roof-less, sitting 1 meter off the ground, with a wing worthy of a race car and an engine with over 503 hp. It was presented at the GTI-Treffen gathering in Wörthersee, Austria, as a one-off. It was never sold.
The Edition 50: The Most Radical Production GTI Ever
325 hp, 420 Nm, front-wheel drive, 7-speed DSG — and a lap of the Nürburgring in 7'46"125, the best time ever set by a production Golf. Auto Journal describes it as a "maxi Clubsport", positioned between the 300 hp GTI Clubsport and the 333 hp Golf R with its four-wheel drive.
The hierarchy in the Golf performance lineup is now clear: GTI 265 hp, GTI Clubsport 300 hp, GTI Edition 50 at 325 hp, Golf R 333 hp. The Edition 50 even snatches the Nürburgring record from the Golf R — a front-wheel-drive car faster than a 4x4 on the Nordschleife, that's got people talking. But according to Auto Journal, the Honda Civic Type R is still ahead on that track in the front-wheel-drive category. The price, options, and eco-tax penalty mean it's reserved for true believers.
