The upcoming Volkswagen ID. Polo finally reveals itself in near-final form, with an electric GTI variant packing 223 horsepower. This electric city car, which will replace the current gasoline Polo starting from €22,510, will be officially presented in May 2026 with sales to follow shortly after.

After months of camouflage, spy photographers have finally captured the ID. Polo in its near-final livery. This electric city car marks a turning point for Volkswagen, which is catching up to the Renault 5 E-Tech and Citroën ë-C3 already on the market.

The final design remains very faithful to the concept ID.2All unveiled in 2023. Unlike other models in the ID range, this electric Polo adopts a more traditional style, less "electric-looking". At the rear, a horizontal light strip marks the brand's new visual identity.

An Electric GTI Version with 223 Horsepower

The surprise comes from the GTI variant spotted during testing. This sporty version delivers 223 horsepower in front-wheel drive, marking a departure from previous gasoline GTIs. It stands out with specific alloy wheels, red brake calipers, and a front bumper with a large honeycomb-pattern air intake.

Unlike classic GTIs that are often showy, this electric version emphasizes subtlety. The side skirt extensions and rear diffuser remain understated, in keeping with previous generations.

What Range for the ID. Polo?

Sources mention an estimated range of 300 to 400 kilometers according to WLTP cycle for base models. This performance places it in the mid-range segment, compared to the 320 km of the Renault 5 or the 326 km of the Citroën ë-C3.

The interior, already partially revealed, follows the ID family codes with a central touchscreen and digital instrumentation. The entry-level Life trim comes standard with 15-inch wheels, LED headlights, and wireless Apple CarPlay connectivity.

What Will It Cost?

Volkswagen hasn't yet announced official pricing for the ID. Polo. For reference, the current gasoline Polo starts at €22,510 in Life trim with the 1.0 TSI engine producing 80 horsepower. The electric version should logically be priced around €25,000, positioning itself against the Renault 5 starting at €25,990.

Production will take place in Spain at the Martorell plant. This location allows Volkswagen to benefit from European subsidies for electric vehicles manufactured on the continent. The official presentation is scheduled for May 2026, with first deliveries expected to follow shortly.

The ID. Polo arrives in a segment that's heating up. Besides Renault and Citroën, it will have to compete with the Hyundai i20 and other emerging contenders in this increasingly competitive market.
