Volkswagen Hits 2 Million EVs Sold: ID.4 Leads the Charge

Volkswagen has crossed the 2 million electric vehicle milestone since 2013. The 2 millionth example—an ID.3 built at Zwickau—was delivered in Dresden in February 2026. While it took VW 12 years to reach its first million, it needed just 10 months to double that number.
"We've doubled our cumulative EV production faster than some automakers can change paint colors between model years." — According to Carscoops observations
This symbolic milestone illustrates Volkswagen's breakneck acceleration in the EV market. The German brand, which kicked off its electric adventure with the e-up! in 2013, now displays impressive output across its ID. range.
The ID.4 Dominates Sales
Contrary to what you might expect, the ID.3 isn't Volkswagen's EV sales leader. The SUV ID.4, launched in 2021 alongside its coupe sibling ID.5, has racked up 901,000 global deliveries on its own. The ID.3, despite being the MEB platform pioneer, trails with 628,000 units sold since 2019.
The ID.7, positioned as the electric Passat alternative, rounds out the podium with 132,000 units delivered. Martin Sander, Volkswagen's sales chief, notes that "two million electric vehicles clearly demonstrate the appeal and competitiveness of our EV range."
Europe: The Playground That Works
Volkswagen leans heavily on the European market, where one in five cars sold is now electric. The brand claims a leadership position in Europe's EV segment, with a lineup stretching from the compact ID.3 to the ID.7 sedan built for long-distance driving.
The United States remains trickier territory. The American market has experienced notable slowdown, though Volkswagen continues moving ID.4s despite competition from Tesla and domestic automakers.
When Do the New Models Arrive?
Volkswagen is preparing two newcomers in the city car segment: the ID. Polo and ID. Cross. These vehicles, built on the front-wheel-drive MEB+ platform, will be produced in Spain and aim to democratize EVs further.
These new models won't reach North America, confirming VW's European-focused strategy for small electric cars.
Chinese Competition Closes In
While Volkswagen's 2 million vehicles over 13 years sound impressive, perspective shifts when you look at Asian competitors. BYD, the Chinese giant, sold over 2.2 million electric vehicles in 2025 alone. Tesla, at its peak, approached 2 million units annually.
This comparison reveals the intensity of the global EV race and how quickly positions can shift. Volkswagen is banking on its expanded lineup and international presence to hold its ground in this fast-moving sector.
The German brand expects its future affordable models to accelerate further, aiming for the third million in record time. The ID. Polo and ID. Cross should contribute significantly once launched.
The key handover of this anniversary ID.3 in Dresden marks a symbolic milestone. Built at Zwickau and delivered at the former Transparent Factory where ID.3 production ended in December, this car represents the torch passing between Volkswagen production sites.
