Rivian is coming out swinging with the R2, its first affordable electric SUV, launching Spring 2026 with a starting price of $57,990. With up to 656 horsepower, a range of 531 kilometers, and an 812-liter trunk, this direct competitor to the Tesla Model Y is aiming for the jackpot in the most competitive segment of the EV market. The California-based manufacturer is betting everything on this model to finally reach profitability after a rocky start.

A Strategic Gamble After a Complicated Start

Rivian is radically shifting gears with this R2. Gone are the big R1T pickups and R1S SUVs selling for over $70,000 and reserved for a wealthy clientele. The California manufacturer is now tackling the mass market with a vehicle designed to compete head-on with the Tesla Model Y, the absolute market benchmark.

This strategy is essential after a particularly difficult 2025 for the company led by RJ Scaringe. The brand had to scale back its ambitions and drastically optimize its production to survive in an increasingly competitive electric market.

The R2 measures 4.72 meters long with a wheelbase of 2.94 meters, dimensions perfectly calibrated for the European market where Rivian never sold its first models, deemed too large.

Three Powertrains to Cover All Needs

The R2 will be offered in three distinct configurations from its launch in Spring 2026. The R2 Performance version kicks things off at $57,990 with its all-wheel-drive powertrain developing 656 horsepower. It sprints from 0 to 60 mph in 3.6 seconds and boasts a range of 531 kilometers according to the US EPA standard.

An intermediate version will arrive at $53,990 in late 2026, before the entry-level variant at $45,000 arrives in 2027. This latter version will even offer a rear-wheel-drive option to optimize costs and range, with a maximum announced capacity of 555 kilometers.

Distinctive Design and Optimized Space

Stylistically, you can't confuse the R2 with the competition. Rivian retains its visual DNA with the signature horizontal light bar that spans the entire front end, pronounced wheel arches, and robust proportions that recall the brand's outdoor ethos.

Interior space is a major strong point with an 812-liter trunk, only 10 liters less than the Tesla Model Y. The generous 2.94-meter wheelbase frees up comfortable interior space for five occupants, while the flat floor optimizes legroom for rear passengers.

What's the Announced Range?

The range question varies by version. The most efficient variant promises 555 kilometers in the EPA cycle, while the R2 Performance settles for 531 kilometers due to its more powerful motor and wider wheels. These figures place the R2 in the upper-middle of the segment, slightly behind the 594 kilometers of the Model Y Long Range but ahead of many European competitors.

Charging is done on fast chargers up to 150 kW, with confirmed compatibility with the Tesla Supercharger network thanks to the NACS adapter. A significant advantage in the US where Tesla's network remains the benchmark for reliability.

Strategic Partnership with Uber

The most spectacular announcement concerns the partnership signed with Uber. The ride-hailing platform plans to acquire up to 50,000 R2 units by 2031 as part of an investment that could reach $1.25 billion. This collaboration aims to deploy a fleet of autonomous robotaxis starting in 2028, beginning with San Francisco and Miami.

Uber will receive approximately 19.55 million Rivian shares initially.
