Rivian is at a turning point. The American automaker is gearing up for the commercial launch of its R2, a compact SUV expected around $45,000, while juggling some hot potatoes on its R1S and R1T models: repairs that can exceed $50,000 for a simple fender bender, and rear doors whose safety is sparking debate.

"The R2, compared to the R1, weighs over 900 kg less. It's sportier, more dynamic, more agile." — Max Koff, Rivian Chief Engineer

A Repair Bill That Makes Insurers Gulp

An R1S owner posted on Reddit in February 2026 a photo of a mundane parking lot scrape — a dented rear quarter panel with damage to the wheel, chassis, and suspension. Nothing that looks like a catastrophe at first glance. And yet, the quote from the authorized Rivian shop stung: $53,736 for repairs. Including $29,856 in labor alone.

Why such a sum? Replacing a quarter window on these big SUVs requires almost completely disassembling the rear of the vehicle. Parts are expensive, the structure is complex, and certified techs are few and far between. The result: insurers would rather total the car than write a five-figure check for a vehicle that still runs.

This isn't the first time. Another owner dodged a $41,000 quote thanks to a paintless dent repair specialist. The reality is that the R1S and R1T architecture makes some repairs wildly disproportionate to the visible damage.

💡 Key Figure
Of the $53,736 repair estimate for the parking lot-damaged R1S, $29,856 was just for labor — over 55% of the total bill.

R2 Rear Doors: Same Problem as the R1?

That's the question several specialized YouTubers asked when they got access to pre-production versions of the R2. And the answer is clear: no, Rivian hasn't fixed the issue. Like on the R1T and R1S, rear passengers who get trapped (electrical failure, crash) have to remove a plastic panel to access a mechanical release cable. In an emergency, every second counts, and this maneuver is anything but intuitive.

JerryRigEverything showed the mechanism in a recent video: it's exactly the same principle as on the R1s. Tesla faces similar criticism for its electronic handles. But the location of the emergency release on Rivians is particularly criticized, precisely because it's not visible at first glance.

This remains a blind spot for the manufacturer, especially since occupant safety is under close scrutiny in the US after several accidents involving vehicles with electronic door handles.

💡 Did You Know?
US authorities are increasingly examining the emergency release systems of electric vehicles. Several manufacturers, including Tesla and Rivian, face criticism for the complexity of their interior emergency release mechanisms.

At What Price Will the R2 Be Available?

The R2 is expected to start at $45,000 in the US, roughly half the price of a well-equipped R1S. Production is set to begin in the second quarter of 2026 at the Normal, Illinois plant, initially on a single assembly line. A second line will be added later to ramp up output.

Rivian is targeting 20,000 to 25,000 R2 units delivered in 2026. CFO Claire McDonough stated during the Q4 2025 earnings call that the overall goal is between 62,000 and 67,000 vehicles for the year, with R1T and R1S maintaining a pace similar to 2025, around 42,000 units.
