Porsche Cayenne Electric: History, Electrification & Design
The Cayenne Electric has officially begun production in Slovakia mere months after its global debut. This SUV marks a major turning point for Porsche: it's the first time the Cayenne abandons combustion engines for 100% electric power. With 1,156 horsepower in Turbo guise, it even becomes the most powerful production Porsche ever built.
"It's the most powerful Porsche ever produced. The Turbo version reaches, with supercharging, a total of 1,156 hp, worthy of a hypercar" — Motor1
A history that began with a sedan project
The electrification of the Cayenne marks the culmination of a strategy launched over 20 years ago. Few know it, but before venturing into SUVs, Porsche had already imagined breaking from its comfort zone with the Project 989 in the 1980s. This four-door sedan never materialized, but it foreshadowed the manufacturer's willingness to diversify its range beyond the legendary 911.
The original Cayenne arrived in 2002, inciting outrage from purists. Today, this model represents a significant share of the brand's sales. This new electric generation continues this logic of embraced disruption.
Production in Slovakia: An industrial revolution
The Bratislava plant has produced thermal and hybrid Cayenne versions for several years alongside Audi and Volkswagen models on the same platform. Now it also hosts manufacturing of the Cayenne Electric, based on the PPE architecture (Premium Platform Electric).
This flexible production allows Porsche to "respond quickly to demand changes," according to the brand. The proportions between different powertrains can be adjusted according to orders, within certain technical limits.
Battery assembly brought in-house
The main innovation lies in battery assembly. Unlike the Taycan and Macan Electric, where Porsche relied on supplier Dräxlmaier, the manufacturer has created the Porsche Smart Battery Shop in Horná Streda for the Cayenne Electric.
This 40,000 m² facility, representing an investment of over one billion euros, employs 150 people across two shifts. They assemble 132 modules per hour using pouch cells supplied by LG Energy Solution. Each vehicle requires six modules to constitute its 113 kWh battery (108 kWh net).
"Proximity to Porsche Werkzeugbau was a key success factor: prototyping expertise was successfully transferred to series production," explains the manufacturer. The process includes cell preparation, stacking, laser welding, cooling plate integration, and final testing.
What performance does the Cayenne Electric deliver?
The figures are truly staggering. The base version already produces considerable power, but the Cayenne Turbo Electric impresses with its 1,156 horsepower in boost mode. Enough to dispatch the 0-100 km/h sprint in just 3.7 seconds according to initial estimates.
This record power comes alongside announced range of approximately 500 kilometers WLTP. Fast charging benefits from the PPE platform's 800-volt architecture, inherited from the Taycan.
Design rethought for electric mobility
Visually, this Cayenne Electric distinguishes itself through more generous dimensions. At 4.97 meters long with a 3.02-meter wheelbase, it exceeds its thermal predecessor (4.93 m long, 2.89 m wheelbase). Passenger accommodation improves, as does cargo volume reaching 781 liters, expandable to 1,588 liters with seats folded.
The front adopts a closed grille to optimize aerodynamics, while LED headlights are refined. The bodywork without B-pillars eases access. Inside, Porsche emphasizes a curved screen dubbed the Flow Display, a first for the German brand.
Pricing and availability timeline?
The Cayenne Electric's pricing has not yet been officially announced by Porsche France. According to available information, sales should begin during 2026, likely around summer.
With production now underway in Bratislava, first deliveries could come relatively quickly. Porsche
