Land Rover officially confirms the development of its electric "baby" Defender. The British automaker promises a compact model of 4.50 meters that will retain the off-road capabilities of the range, despite a dedicated 100% electric platform expected as early as 2027.

"Development is well advanced and we must ensure that everything we do with Defender possesses the brand's DNA: epic, robust capabilities and the ability to go anywhere" — Mark Cameron, Defender Brand Director

A More Accessible Electric Defender

Land Rover is betting on this new model to democratize access to the Defender lineup. At an announced length of around 4.50 meters, this "baby" Defender will position itself below the current Defender 90 while offering four doors.

The British automaker is working on the EMA (Electric Modular Architecture) electric platform from JLR, specifically designed for the group's future electric SUVs. A dual electric motor configuration appears favored, guaranteeing standard all-wheel drive.

💡 Did You Know?
This will be the first Defender designed from the outset as an electric vehicle, unlike current versions adapted from a thermal base.

The Technical Challenges of Electrification

Integrating batteries beneath the floor modifies vehicle design. Mark Cameron acknowledges that "the size of the vehicle and platform will likely reduce wheel articulation and suspension travel compared to a current Defender". Despite these technical constraints, Land Rover maintains demanding off-road capability requirements.

The major challenge remains balancing off-road performance with electric range. The traditional Defender silhouette—vertical and massive—does not optimize aerodynamics, penalizing energy efficiency.

A Strategic Position Against Competition

The project fits into JLR's "House of Brands" strategy, where Defender becomes an autonomous brand alongside Range Rover and Discovery. Mark Cameron mentions work "spanning seven to ten years" to develop a complete portfolio.

This approach aims to position Defender as a "luxury lifestyle brand" according to the director's terms. The baby Defender will become the second vehicle in this nascent sub-brand, each maintaining its own distinct identity.

💡 Key Figure
The baby Defender will measure approximately 177 inches (4.5 meters)—the same length as the two-door Defender 90—but with four doors.

Intensifying Chinese Competition

Parallel to this, Geely is developing its own Defender rival with the Galaxy Cruiser. This Chinese SUV borrows Defender aesthetic codes with surprising amphibious capabilities, able to navigate water at 8 km/h for two hours.

Land Rover's timing appears to respond to this growing competitive pressure. Geely plans to commercialize its SUV in China at the end of 2026 and in Europe shortly after, with a triple-motor hybrid powertrain.

💡 Technical Point
JLR's EMA platform will also optimize weight distribution through batteries integrated into the chassis, improving the center of gravity.

When Will It Be Available?

First deliveries of the baby Defender are expected during 2027. Land Rover has not yet communicated a precise timeline, but open-road testing has already begun—a sign that development is progressing rapidly.

The automaker still needs to finalize the official designation. While the name "Defender Sport" is circulating, nothing is confirmed. This designation would fit the logic of Range Rover Sport and Discovery Sport.

What Will It Cost?

Land Rover is betting on this model to offer a more accessible entry point to the Defender lineup. No official pricing has been announced, but positioning suggests a price below the current Defender 90, which starts around 60,000 euros.

The stated objective is to democratize access to Defender capabilities without compromising the brand's premium image. A delicate balance that this new model will need to achieve against competition that shows no signs of weakening.
