BMW i3 2027: 900 km Range for New Electric Sedan
BMW revives the i3 name for a sedan with a 900-kilometer range that bears no resemblance to the original urban runabout. The Munich-based brand officially presents its new Neue Klasse electric sedan, a strategic model intended to reclaim the premium segment from the Mercedes EQS and Chinese manufacturers. Market launch scheduled for late 2026 with a pricing strategy still under wraps.
"With the i3, we are not conducting a technological experiment. It is a core model that embodies the very essence of BMW for five decades" — Oliver Zipse, CEO BMW
The 2026 BMW i3 resurrects a name steeped in history, but in a diametrically opposed register. Gone is the futuristic, carbon-fiber city car; in its place, a four-door sedan that follows directly in the lineage of the historic 3 Series. A deliberate choice by BMW, which is betting on nostalgia to better sell its electric revolution.
This strategy of recycling model names is not trivial. As electric vehicle sales stall in Europe, BMW prefers to lean on familiar references rather than create new codes. According to our information, the manufacturer hesitated at length before reusing this name, aware of the inevitable comparisons with the old i3.
A Sedan Built for Long Journeys
The 900-kilometer WLTP range is the new i3's knockout argument. BMW achieves this with a 108.7 kWh battery pack integrated into a new 800-volt architecture. This configuration enables ultra-fast charging at 400 kW, meaning 400 kilometers of range recovered in ten minutes according to the manufacturer.
The xDrive all-wheel-drive system relies on two electric motors developing 469 horsepower and 645 Nm of torque. Figures identical to those of the already available iX3, yet BMW paradoxally announces an extra 100 kilometers of range. This difference is explained by the sedan's more favorable aerodynamics and extensive energy optimization work.
The Neue Klasse Design in Question
The aesthetics are already dividing purists. BMW abandons the controversial lines of the Chris Bangle era to return to the codes of the 1960s-1970s. The grille regains more classic proportions, the headlights stretch horizontally, and the silhouette favors elegance over stylistic effects.
This aesthetic direction contrasts with that of the facelifted 7 Series, which will retain its XXL grille and split headlights. BMW is therefore embracing two parallel design languages: Neue Klasse for electric models, evolution of the current style for combustion and hybrid models. A strategy that raises questions about mid-term lineup coherence.
Artificial Intelligence at the Heart of the Project
BMW is betting heavily on onboard electronics with four interconnected "super-brains." The central processor, the Heart of Joy, is said to react ten times faster than current systems. This computing power fuels semi-autonomous driving functions, optimized energy management, and the next-generation user interface.
The cabin adopts the BMW Panoramic Vision panoramic screen, which makes traditional instrumentation disappear. The display projects across the entire width of the dashboard, integrating navigation, driving data, and entertainment into a single interface. An approach close to that of the Mercedes Hyperscreen, but BMW claims more intuitive ergonomics.
What Strategy Against Premium Competitors?
This i3 arrives in a premium electric market undergoing a complete reshuffle. The Mercedes EQS dominates with its traditional luxury, the Audi ee-tron GT](/article/volkswagen-id-3-gtx-performance-326-ch-pour-defier-la-hyundai-ioniq-5-n) bets on sportiness, while Tesla retains its technological lead. BMW is trying to differentiate itself through range and a return to aesthetic fundamentals.
Chinese manufacturers like BYD or NIO are also intensifying pricing pressure. BMW will therefore have to find the right balance between technical innovation and price positioning to avoid repeating the mistakes of the old i3, which was sold too expensively for its actual capabilities.
