BMW has officially set March 18, 2026 as the reveal date for the new i3, its first fully electric 3 Series. The second model on the Neue Klasse platform, this sedan promises 469 hp, a range of up to 900 km WLTP, and charging up to 400 kW. Production will start in Munich in mid-2026, with European deliveries before year's end.

An Electric 3 Series, Finally

We've been waiting for this for years. BMW did release an i3 back in 2013—a quirky little carbon-fiber city car, fun but niche. Then in 2022, the name disappeared from the European catalog. Since then, rumors have been swirling about a proper electric 3 Series, one that could play with the big boys. On March 18, 2026, BMW has made the call: that's the day the next-generation i3 will be unveiled to the world.

BMW tweeted on March 5, 2026 with the tagline "A new era continues: 18.03.2026. Are you ready for the new BMW i3?" No corporate fluff. The brand knows this model matters, and they're saying it loud and clear.

The car is officially called the BMW i3 50 xDrive for the launch version. This isn't some hastily electrified 3 Series—it's an architecture designed for electric from the ground up.

💡 Did you know?
The "i3" name had already been recycled by BMW for a long-wheelbase electric 3 Series sold exclusively in China. The new global i3, however, is a completely different model, shorter and developed specifically for European and American markets.

The Neue Klasse Platform: What's the Real Deal?

The Neue Klasse is BMW's new technical foundation for its electric vehicles. The iX3, released first, inaugurated this architecture. The i3 is the second model to benefit from it. The difference from previous generations is that this platform wasn't adapted for electric—it was built for it from the start.

800-volt architecture, next-generation cylindrical cell batteries, zonal electronics that reduce wiring and weight: the change is profound. BMW talks about a central unit called "Heart of Joy" and significantly faster reaction times than previous systems. The battery, with its 108.7 kWh of usable energy content (according to iX3 data, its direct technical sibling), is integrated into the chassis structure. That lowers the center of gravity and stiffens the whole thing. For a sedan that's supposed to be fun to drive, that's good news.

Four high-performance computing units manage the vehicle's main functions. This also enables over-the-air software updates, continuing what Tesla and Chinese manufacturers have been doing for years.

469 HP and 900 km: The Numbers That Get People Talking

Let's start with what grabs attention. The i3 50 xDrive develops 469 hp and 645 Nm of torque, via two motors—a separately excited synchronous motor at the rear, an asynchronous one at the front. The same mechanical setup as the iX3 50 xDrive, but on a lower, more aerodynamic sedan. On paper, the range should exceed that of the SUV, which already achieves 805 km WLTP.

BMW is quoting 900 km WLTP for the i3. That's a provisional figure, still undergoing homologation, notes Le Blog Auto. Stay realistic: WLTP is generous, and real-world results will be lower. But even at 75% of that value, we'd be talking about 675 km of real-world range. For a premium sedan, that's a whole different ball game.

400 kW DC fast charging is unprecedented in series production for this segment. Recovering 400 km in 10 minutes: in practice, that changes the long-distance game. No more battling charging anxiety. The i3 also offers bidirectional charging—Vehicle-to-Load, Vehicle-to-Home, and Vehicle-to-Grid depending on the market.

💡 Key Figure
With charging power reaching up to 400 kW, the 2026 BMW i3 places itself among the fastest-charging electric sedans on the market. For comparison, the Tesla Model 3 tops out at around 250 kW on the latest versions.
