BMW i3 Neue Klasse: The Revolutionary Electric Sedan Unveiled

802 words5 min readBy Thomas Martin

BMW officially unveils its electric sedan, the i3, on March 18, 2026, making it the second model in the Neue Klasse family after the iX3. This new version packs 469 horsepower, promises up to 700 kilometers of range, and charges at 400 kW thanks to its 800-volt architecture.

"With the Neue Klasse, we have reached the sixth generation of cells and we have contributed enormously to the range. We don't think there are any critical issues in that regard." — Joachim Post, BMW R&D Head

A Revolutionary Platform Named Neue Klasse

The BMW i3 marks the electric sedan's entry into the Neue Klasse era, an architecture developed specifically for electric vehicles. This platform arrives after the iX3 SUV and will serve as the base for more than 40 electric models by the end of 2027.

The 800-volt architecture is the technical heart of this new generation. It allows for a maximum charging power of 400 kW, enabling a range top-up in just 15 minutes at compatible stations. A technological leap that places BMW among the European benchmarks for fast charging.

The sixth generation of the eDrive system equips the car with two electric motors: an electrically excited synchronous motor on the rear axle and a motor on the front. This xDrive configuration delivers a combined output of 469 horsepower and 645 Nm of torque, guaranteeing performance worthy of the 3 Series' sporting heritage.

BMW announces a range of over 700 km in the WLTP cycle thanks to Gen6 batteries, which is 30% better than the previous generation.

The "Heart of Joy" at the Center of the Driving Experience

BMW is also revolutionizing onboard electronics with the "Heart of Joy" system. This central control unit, ten times faster than previous systems according to the manufacturer, coordinates the management of the powertrain, braking, energy recuperation, and certain steering functions.

The system relies on the in-house BMW Dynamic Performance Control software to optimize dynamic behavior in real-time. Engineers are currently finalizing these settings during intensive winter testing on the snowy roads of Arjeplog, Sweden, where BMW has been testing its models for five decades.

A Design That Breaks with Current Codes

Gone are the oversized grilles and massive lines of recent BMW models. The i3 returns to classic proportions: a long wheelbase, short overhangs, and a balanced silhouette. The drag coefficient drops to 0.24, a record for the category.

The front end sports a new lighting signature with simulated "nostrils" created by LED lines and four vertical elements for the daytime running lights. The rear lights retain the traditional horizontal "L" shape that visually widens the rear.

The interior debuts the BMW Panoramic iDrive with a display band stretching across the entire width of the windshield and a 17.9-inch central screen oriented towards the driver. The two-spoke vertical steering wheel is surprising but reportedly proves to be less distracting in use according to initial feedback.

The i3 reuses the name of the old BMW electric city car sold from 2013 to 2022, but has no technical link with it whatsoever.

When Will It Be Available in France?

BMW has confirmed an official presentation on March 18, 2026, followed by a market launch later that year. The first units should arrive at French dealerships in the second half of 2026, with a ramp-up in deliveries starting in early 2027.

Production begins at the Munich plant in November 2026, with a second site in Mexico (San Luis Potosi) planned for 2027 to meet global demand. A i3 Touring estate version will complete the lineup in 2027.

A Strengthened Ecological Commitment

The i3 pushes the sustainable approach already initiated with the iX3 further. BMW claims a better carbon footprint than an equivalent combustion model after just 1 to 2 years of use, thanks in part to the decarbonization of the supply chain.

The manufacturer integrates about 30% secondary materials: 70-80% recycled aluminum for the wheels, partially recycled cobalt and lithium in the Gen6 batteries. The seats in the "Essential" trim receive Econeer covers made from 100% recyclable textile.

The front bumper integrates 30% recycled plastic with only 7 different types of materials compared to 15 previously, facilitating end-of-life recycling.
