Audi is stopping A8 orders in Germany starting February 18, 2026, ending 32 years of production for its flagship sedan. The brand hasn't announced a successor and admits to being "in search of a platform" to replace this iconic model launched in 1994.

"We will only communicate additional details about a potential successor at a later date" — Audi Spokesperson

The End of a Three-Decade Reign

The Audi A8 takes its final bow after marking the history of the Ingolstadt brand. Launched in 1994, this prestige sedan passed through four generations and became the symbol of German technological expertise. The current generation, sold since 2017, has now reached the end of the road with a brutal decision: Audi has ceased taking orders on its home German market.

The numbers speak for themselves: only 1,406 units were sold in the United States in 2025, a drop of 14% compared to the previous year. In Europe, the situation is hardly better, with sales sometimes counting only dozens of units on certain markets.

💡 Did You Know?
The Audi A8 was one of the first series production sedans equipped with a completely aluminum bodywork, an innovation that allowed it to reduce its weight by nearly 200 kg compared to its steel competitors.

A Declining Luxury Sedan Market

The segment of large prestige sedans is suffering from customers turning away from this type of body style. Faced with the rise of SUVs, even the most prestigious models struggle to attract buyers. Mercedes S-Class and BMW 7 Series are holding up better but are also recording significant sales declines.

The current A8, despite its 2022 facelift, shows its limitations against more recently renewed competitors. Its MLB Evo platform, shared with other Volkswagen group models, can no longer meet new environmental regulations without major modifications.

Audi's Technological Impasse

According to Automobilwoche, Audi finds itself in a delicate situation. The brand is actively searching for "a platform for a potential successor" but is hitting several obstacles. Another facelift has been ruled out, as the car requires a completely new architecture to comply with future regulations.

💡 Technical Point
Porsche's decision to postpone its electric K1 SUV directly impacted Audi's plans, which had counted on sharing this platform for a future electric A8.

The option for a fully electric version, initially considered with the 2021 Grandsphere concept, now appears compromised. The slower-than-expected adoption of electric vehicles in the premium segment makes this bet financially risky. Porsche itself recently backtracked by deciding to launch its next large SUV with traditional engines.

What's the Competition Doing?

While Audi hesitates, Mercedes is actively preparing the new generation of its S-Class, expected by 2027. BMW is also working on the renewal of its 7 Series, which should benefit from new hybrid and electric powertrains. This inaction from Audi could cost it dearly in terms of image and positioning.

On Lexus side, the LS isn't faring much better with 1,082 units sold in the United States last year. But unlike Audi, the Japanese brand maintains its sedan in the catalog and is preparing its evolution.

💡 Key Figure
Worldwide A8 sales fell to less than 15,000 units in 2024, compared to more than 50,000 units annually in the early 2000s.

Sales Collapsing Everywhere

The 14,955 global deliveries in 2024 represent a dramatic drop of 26.3% compared to the previous year. These catastrophic figures are explained by several factors: the age of the current generation, fierce competition from premium SUVs, and uncertainty over the model's future.

In China, even the extended Horch version, specifically developed for this crucial market, fails to reverse the trend. The historic name, which pays tribute to one of Audi's founders, wasn't enough to seduce a clientele
