BMW, Mercedes, Volvo, and Audi are clashing in the electric arena with a wave of new premium sedans and SUVs redefining the segment. The new BMW i3 promises 900 km of range while the DS N°8 boasts 446 miles, and Mercedes prepares its C-Class EQ to counter Tesla's Model 3.

BMW Strikes Hard with the New i3 Neue Klasse

BMW is bringing out the heavy artillery with its new i3 Neue Klasse, an electric sedan marking a turning point in the Bavarian automaker's strategy. This spiritual successor to the legendary combustion-engine 3 Series boasts impressive figures: 900 km of WLTP range and 463 horsepower split between two motors (322 hp at the rear, 165 hp at the front).

Production begins in Munich in the second half of 2026, with a radically different technical approach from the current i4. Gone is the CLAR platform shared with combustion models: the i3 is entirely based on the Neue Klasse architecture dedicated to electric vehicles. This technical base allows it to achieve a perfect 50:50 weight distribution and offer superior interior space despite its 4.76-meter length.

💡 Did you know?
The current BMW i4 will cease production in 2027 to avoid any conflict with the new i3 in the Munich factories.

The design adopts the new BMW philosophy with headlights and grille fused into a single element, but in a wider interpretation than the iX3 SUV to emphasize the sedan's road-going character. Aerodynamics receive particular attention with an optimized Cx to maximize range.

Mercedes Counters with the C-Class EQ

Facing BMW's offensive, Mercedes-Benz isn't standing idly by. The C-Class EQ arrives in early 2026 to directly attack the stronghold of the Tesla Model 3. Based on the MB.EA 800V architecture, this electric sedan offers several battery capacities ranging from 64 kWh to 94 kWh.

Range exceeds 435 miles (700 km) on the best-equipped version, enough to rival the best in the segment. Mercedes is betting on refined road manners, with suspension specially calibrated to mask the extra weight of the batteries. Optional rear-wheel steering promises remarkable agility in tight corners.

Design-wise, the C-Class EQ distinguishes itself from its combustion sibling with a more vertical front end and a more steeply raked rear window. The extended wheelbase frees up interior space, while 400 kW fast charging promises very short stops on the highway.

The DS N°8 Plays the French Luxury Card

DS Automobiles doesn't want to leave the field open to the Germans with its N°8, the French brand's first 100% electric car. This 5-meter sedan-crossover boasts an official range of 446 miles, or over 700 km under optimal conditions.

Its positioning sits between the Audi Q4 e-tron and the Q6 e-tron, but DS embraces a more sedan-like character than SUV. The base FWD 230 version develops 227 horsepower for a 0-100 km/h time of 7.7 seconds, while higher versions promise more muscular performance.

💡 Key Figure
The DS N°8 weighs over 2.4 tonnes but maintains healthy road manners thanks to a well-studied weight distribution.

The interior bets on distinctive French design with premium materials and reworked ergonomics. DS is targeting a clientele attached to French refinement, facing the more technical codes of its German rivals.

Volvo Returns to Sedans with the ES90

After neglecting the segment, Volvo makes its comeback with the ES90, a large 5-meter electric sedan that picks up the stylistic codes of the 90 family. This sedan-crossover hybrid plays on ambiguity between genres, not quite an SUV nor a full sedan.

Under the hood, Volvo promises generous performance with over 2.4 tonnes on the scale but preserved handling thanks to a lowered center of gravity. The official range has not yet been announced, but the pre
