2026 Ford Mustang Mach-E California Special & Cupra Tavascan Updates

Ford and Cupra are reigniting the electric battle with major 2026 updates. The Mustang Mach-E receives a special California Special edition and price cuts of up to €2,000, while the Tavascan welcomes a new entry-level version with 190 hp to compete head-on with Tesla and Volkswagen.
"The GT California Special honors the Mustang Mach-E's place in the Mustang family, while paying tribute to the California Ford dealers who were at the origin of Mustang sales success in the 1960s" — Ford Motor Company
Ford Bets on Nostalgia with the California Special
Ford is bringing out the heavy artillery to revive interest in its Mustang Mach-E, whose sales are struggling to take off in Europe. The new GT California Special draws direct inspiration from the 1968 Mustang of the same name, created to celebrate the Californian dealers who propelled the success of the American muscle car.

This special series is distinguished by 20-inch carbon gray GT/CS-branded wheels, specific Navy Blue badges, and most notably a wide decorative stripe that runs across the entire hood. The latter blends shades of gray, black, and blue evoking California sunsets. Inside, the Performance seats feature perforated Navy Blue Sensico upholstery, a synthetic material more durable than traditional leather.
Price Cuts to Reclaim the Market
More important than aesthetics, Ford is adjusting its pricing strategy with significant cuts. The RWD Standard Range 73 kWh version drops by €1,000 while the Premium RWD Extended Range 88 kWh version falls by €2,000. These reductions place the Mach-E in a more competitive position against its European and Chinese rivals.
Range also improves thanks to the adoption of low rolling resistance tires on the Premium versions. Official figures now reach 615 km for RWD and 555 km for AWD according to the WLTP cycle. A welcome improvement for a model that was lagging behind the competition on this point.
The Tavascan Counters with an Entry-Level Version
For its part, Cupra is not standing still and unveils a new entry-level variant for its Tavascan. This version abandons the 77 kWh battery in favor of a more compact 58 kWh pack with LFP (lithium-iron-phosphate) chemistry, which is cheaper to produce.

The electric motor develops 140 kW or 190 hp, identical to the Endurance version, but the range logically drops to 435 km WLTP compared to 552 km for the high-end variant. Fast charging remains efficient at 135 kW DC, allowing a 10% to 80% charge in 26 minutes.
Starting from what price?
Cupra has not yet announced the exact price for this entry-level version, but it should logically be positioned below the current €46,590 starting price of the base version. This strategy aims to compete directly with the Tesla Model Y and Volkswagen Group's electric SUVs like the ID.4.
The Tavascan's interior also evolves with the abandonment of capacitive buttons in favor of actual physical controls on the steering wheel. The digital instrumentation grows from 5.3 to 10.25 inches while the central 15-inch screen adopts the Android Automotive system instead of the Volkswagen Group's in-house Cariad software.
Persistent Challenges for Both Models
Despite these improvements, the Mustang Mach-E and Tavascan face significant challenges. The American SUV suffers from a blurred image—neither a true Mustang nor a traditional SUV—while the Spanish model is hampered by its Chinese origin, which excludes it from the French ecological bonus.

Sales remain modest for both models. In France, the Mach-E totals fewer than 1,000 annual registrations while a Peugeot ee-3008](/article/peugeot-remplace-le-puretech-par-le-moteur-turbo-100-sur-208-et-2008) exceeds 15,000 units. The Tavascan, launched more recently, also struggles to establish itself against the established segment leaders.
