The Ford Transit City will arrive in Europe in late 2026 with a radically different approach: an electric van made in China and priced between 36,000 and 47,000 euros. This new member of the Transit family directly targets urban deliveries with a 56 kWh LFP battery and a range of 254 km.

A Clear Chinese Partnership

The Transit City is born from the collaboration between Ford and Jiangling Motors Corporation (JMC), its Chinese partner in which Ford holds a 30% stake. The vehicle will be assembled at the JMC plant in Nanchang and imported directly into Europe. This strategy allows Ford to offer aggressive pricing against Asian competition, notably the Kia PV5 which shook up the market with its attractive prices.

This approach contrasts with other European Transits. While the E-Transit Custom is priced at nearly 60,000 euros, the Transit City deliberately positions itself as the affordable alternative. Ford is betting on standardized production to reduce costs: no options, only four body colors, and a complete standard equipment package.

💡 Key Figure
Ford estimates its Transit City will cost 40% less to operate than an equivalent diesel, including maintenance.

Three Body Styles to Cover All Uses

The Transit City comes in three distinct configurations. The L1H1 version offers 6.4 m³ of cargo volume and supports 1,085 kg of payload. The L2H2 model increases to 8.5 m³ with 1,275 kg of capacity and a usable length of 3 meters, allowing it to accommodate three euro-pallets.

A first in this segment for Ford: a chassis-cab version intended for bodybuilders. This configuration opens the door to tippers, refrigerated bodies, and specialized fittings. Ford is relying on its network of 200 approved bodybuilders to offer these variants from launch.

An LFP Battery to Reduce Costs

The heart of the Transit City is its lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) battery supplied by CATL. With 56 kWh of usable capacity, it prioritizes durability and reduced costs over pure performance. This LFP technology offers better thermal stability and superior longevity compared to conventional NMC batteries.

The electric motor delivers 110 kW (150 hp) and powers the front wheels. The maximum range reaches 254 km according to the WLTP cycle, a figure consistent with the targeted urban uses. Charging is possible up to 11 kW on AC (4h30 from 10 to 80%) or 87 kW on DC (33 minutes for the same range).

💡 Technical Point
The "One-Pedal Drive" system allows for enhanced energy recuperation right up to a complete vehicle stop.

How Does It Position Itself Against the Competition?

The Transit City slots between the E-Transit Courier and the E-Transit Custom in Ford's lineup. Its dimensions are close to the Custom's - 4,985 mm long versus 5,050 mm - but with a significantly lower price positioning.

Against European rivals, it faces the Vauxhall Vivaro Electric (75 kWh, 217 km range) and the Volkswagen ID.Buzz Cargo (77 kWh, 258 km). These models offer more range but cost significantly more.

Ford's strategy bets on pragmatism over performance. According to the brand's internal data, electric van users travel an average of less than 110 km per day. The Transit City's range therefore comfortably covers these daily needs.

💡 Did You Know?
The Transit City shares its platform with the JMC Touring, already on sale in China since 2023.

When Will It Be Available in France?

Ford plans to launch the Transit City in late 2026 in Europe, following its presentation at the Hanover Commercial Vehicle Show in the autumn. First deliveries will begin in early 2027.

Precise pricing remains to be confirmed, but Ford mentions a range between 39,000 and 47,000 euros according to sources. This estimate positions the Transit City as a credible alternative to premium European models, while maintaining a comfortable margin over imported Chinese commercial vehicles.
