1982 Renault 5 Found With Only 12 km on the Odometer

A Renault 5 from 1982 with merely 12 km on the odometer has just surfaced in a barn in Saône-et-Loire after 43 years of abandonment. Purchased new by a young woman who never found the courage to drive it, this R5 TL in Slate Blue will be auctioned by Aguttes on March 15, 2026, in Paris.
"I opened the barn door and there it was—not a speck of rust" — Auctioneer Aguttes
The story begins in October 1982 in Chalon-sur-Saône. A young woman walks into the Sodirac dealership with her life savings to purchase her first car. Her choice falls on a five-door Renault 5 TL, equipped with a 1108 cm³ engine and a four-speed manual gearbox. The invoice reads 40,000 francs, equivalent to roughly 6,100 euros in today's money.

A Delivery That Goes Nowhere
The car leaves the dealership with temporary registration plate 9105 WWA 71, valid for 15 days. Delivery goes directly to the owner's home in Laives because she doesn't yet have her driver's license. The 12 kilometers showing on the odometer correspond precisely to the distance between the garage and the family home.
Even after obtaining her license, the owner remains uncomfortable behind the wheel. Gripped by driving anxiety, she chooses to leave her Renault 5 in the family garage. The permanent registration plates, though produced, are discovered still sitting in the car's trunk.

A 43-Year Slumber
By late October 1982, the car is parked in the garage—and never emerges again. It remains there, motionless, blanketed in thick dust, for more than four decades. Only faint traces of mold on certain plastic trim pieces hint at the passage of time.
The discovery of this R5 has caused a sensation on social media. The Instagram account @phares_jaunes_et_damiers publishes the first photographs of this time capsule, revealing a car that appears virtually untouched despite the years.

What Could This Unique Piece Be Worth?
On the classic car market, a first-generation Renault 5 in good condition typically trades around 15,000 euros. But this R5, with its exceptional mileage, represents a singular case. Some experts are already suggesting considerably higher valuations, given the specimen's sheer rarity.
The car will, however, require restoration work. Forty-three years of immobility inevitably take their toll on seals, fluids, and certain mechanical components. Yet the overall condition remains remarkable for an automobile of this age.
A Link to the New Electric R5
This discovery arrives precisely as Renault resurrects the R5 in the form of the 5 E-Tech electric vehicle, in production since 2024. The original combustion-engine ancestor and its electric descendant perfectly illustrate the evolution of French automobiles across four decades.

The auction scheduled for March 15, 2026, at Aguttes in Paris promises to be captivating. This Renault 5 represents far more than merely a car: it crystallizes an era and a singular personal history. For collectors, this is an opportunity to acquire a specimen of absolute rarity—a frozen moment from the 1980s.
