The Munich Regional Court has ordered the suspension of sales of the Renault Clio and Mégane in Germany, following a complaint from US-based Broadcom over patent violations related to in-vehicle Ethernet connections. The ruling, handed down in late April 2026, is not yet enforceable — Broadcom must first post a multi-million euro bond — but Renault has a lot at stake in one of its most strategic markets.

"Renault must destroy all components involved in the dispute and remove both models from dealerships." — Munich Regional Court, preliminary injunction 2026

Two Ethernet Cables That Cost a Fortune

The case stems from a detail that seems almost absurd: specifications related to the Ethernet communication standard embedded in the vehicles. Broadcom, the US semiconductor giant, claims Renault is using patented technologies without a license. The Munich court initially ruled in its favor, specifically targeting the Clio 5, Clio 6, and Mégane E-Tech.

The issue involves two different types of chips, which reach Renault through two separate suppliers. The automaker says it is still "investigating" to identify exactly which components are involved, which isn't particularly reassuring about its grip on its own supply chain.

💡 Did you know?
Broadcom had already sued Volkswagen in 2018 on very similar grounds, seeking up to $1 billion in damages. The case ended in a settlement, without ever going as far as an actual sales suspension.

The decision remains contingent on Broadcom posting the bond — a condition not yet met. Renault has time to breathe, but not to relax. If the bond is posted, the automaker would have to remove both models from German dealerships and destroy the stock of the incriminated components. The kind of scenario no executive wants to see materialize.

Renault Fights Back

Renault "vigorously contests" the decision, according to the tone of its press release — a phrasing that barely conceals a certain irritation. Specifically, the automaker has launched two nullity proceedings to try to invalidate Broadcom's patents, challenging their technical validity and applicability in the automotive context. An appeal has also been filed, but it does not suspend enforcement in Germany.

💡 Key figure
Ford found itself in a similar situation in Germany in 2022, banned from selling certain models for patent violations related to wireless technologies held by Japan's IP Bridge. The precedent is there.

The strategy is clear: multiply procedural fronts to buy time, while hoping either to bring down the patent or reach a settlement — like VW before them. The unspoken question in all press releases is: why did Renault end up in this deadlock when the 2018 VW/Broadcom precedent was known? The answer has yet to be given.

What Are These Models Worth on the Used Market?

While the lawyers scramble, used car buyers may have legitimate questions. For the Clio 4, which remains one of the best sellers on the used market, the situation is more relaxed: this dispute doesn't directly affect it, and its qualities are well known. According to Automobile Magazine, you need to be careful when choosing the engine — not all variants are equal in terms of reliability.

The Mégane R.S. from 2004-2008, on the other hand, is emerging as a rising value. Equipped with the 2.0 F4RT four-cylinder, it averages around €20,000 for a 2007 model with under 130,000 km, according to Sport Auto. The collector F1 Team R26 version puts out 230 hp and remains accessible. As for the R26.R — lighter by 100 kg, with only 126 units produced — it can approach €48,000 for low-mileage examples. A market that isn't weakening.

At the other end of the spectrum, a Clio V6 Phase 1 from 2003 in first-hand condition was recently listed at €58,945 by the seller.
