The Renault 5 E-Tech confirms its status as Europe's electric darling with 38,000 units sold in France in 2025, ranking 7th overall and 4th in January 2026. Facing intensifying competition from the planned arrival of the MG2 (2027), Volkswagen ID.Polo, and Cupra Raval, the French city car maintains its grip on the electric segment.

"7,149 units versus 6,601 for the Tesla Model Y in January: the R5 now outpaces a benchmark of the European electric market" — European registration data

A success story that keeps rolling

The R5 wrapped 2025 with figures that exceeded all initial forecasts. Built in Douai, it required hiring an entire night shift to keep pace with demand. The €24,990 price tag before government subsidies positions the French contender in a segment where the battle is fierce.

💡 Key figure
The R5 E-Tech established itself as Europe's best-selling electric city car in January 2026, even beating the Tesla Model Y with 7,149 registrations versus 6,601.

This success unfolds against a favorable backdrop for battery-electric cars. "Plug-in" vehicles represented 19.3% of European registrations in January, up from 14.9% a year prior, despite an overall market contraction of 3.9%.

MG strikes back with the MG2

MG has no intention of ceding ground to Renault. The Sino-British brand is preparing the MG2 for 2027, an electric city car that squarely targets the R5. Positioned around €20,000, it's expected to measure roughly 4 meters and sport a design "created with Europe in mind".

"We want to build a product specifically for the European market while maintaining the global MG identity," explains Jozef Kaban, MG's global vice president of design. The strategy hinges on an aggressive value proposition, true to MG's philosophy.

Volkswagen and Cupra join the fray

Volkswagen is pushing forward with the ID.Polo, expected this year. Built on the new MEB+ platform, it'll offer two battery options (38 kWh and 56 kWh), with the larger pack delivering close to 280 miles of range (roughly 450 km). A 226-hp GTI variant will appeal to driving enthusiasts.

The Cupra Raval shares the same technical foundation as the ID.Polo. Spotted undisguised during winter testing in Scandinavia, it preserves the lines of the UrbanRebel concept. Its announced price around £23,000 (roughly €27,000) positions it slightly above the R5.

💡 Technical insight
The Cupra Raval VZ packs a limited-slip differential and adaptive suspension—features rarely seen on an electric city car.

The price war kicks off

Price is where the real battle lies. The Renault 5 starts at €24,990, but can drop to €24,340 in 52 kWh form thanks to the European battery subsidy. An entry-level €25,000 version with 300 km of range hunts squarely on Citroën ë-C3 turf.

Facing this pricing offensive, MG leans on its historical positioning with the MG2 expected between €20,000 and €25,000. The BYD Dolphin Surf and Fiat Grande Panda round out a rapidly expanding segment.

The R5's global conquest

Renault isn't stopping at Europe. The R5 is launching its international expansion with 500 units sold in Turkey in 2025. Morocco and Israel follow suit, while Japan represents a bolder bet.

"It has worldwide potential," a Renault executive told the Parisien. The Douai plant will need to keep the rhythm, raising questions about shipping costs and tariffs. But the wager's worth it: making the R5 France's electric ambassador to the world.
