Renault Clio Tops French Car Sales in February 2026

In February 2026, the Renault Clio retook the top spot for sales in France with 6,328 registrations, beating the Peugeot 208 (4,828 units) and the Citroën C3 (4,302 units). This happened in a market in freefall: only 120,764 cars sold for the month, a drop of -14.7% compared to February 2025, according to PFA figures.
"Despite its recent refresh, the Renault Clio is down 27.6% compared to the same month in 2025 — and yet, it keeps the lead in the rankings." — Automobile Magazine
A Market That's Seriously Stalling
January was already bad. February drives the nail home. With barely 120,764 registrations, the French market is falling faster than expected, and without any calendar excuse — the number of working days was identical in 2025. The engine is stalling, as noted by Le Blog Auto.
No major group is spared. The Renault group is doing particularly poorly with -23.5% overall. The diamond brand limits the damage a bit to -16.5%, but Dacia collapses by -36.3% — a third of its volume gone in a year, even though the lineup has been refreshed. Alpine falls even harder at -37.2%.
On the Stellantis side, it's "less bad": the group is down only 7.3%, allowing it to snatch market share in a degraded context. But Peugeot still suffers with -20.7%, while Fiat (+60.6%) and Opel (+51.1%) manage to come out on top.
The Clio Leads, But With a Joker
The Clio gallops ahead in the rankings, except the figure of 6,328 units hides a slightly particular reality. The Clio 5 and the Clio 6 coexist on the market: the outgoing generation has totaled 8,281 units since the start of the year (3.6% market share), while the new Clio 6 is at 5,322 units over two months (2.3%). It's the sum of the two that allows Renault's city car to remain the leader, Planète Renault specifies.
The Clio 6 brings a noticeable evolution: redesigned front end with slimmer headlights, separated rear lights giving it a sportier profile, and integration of the OpenR Link system with Google services — which is starting to become the norm in the segment, but remains a real step forward for the car's digital habitability. On the powertrain side, the TCe 115 (1.2-liter three-cylinder turbo, six-speed manual gearbox) coexists with the Full Hybrid 160 with 158 hp, which emits only 92 g/km of CO₂. According to Auto Bild, the car measures 4.12 m long — typical for the category — and offers up to 391 liters of trunk space in non-hybrid versions.

The 208 Holds On, The C3 Surprises
The Peugeot 208 ranks second with 4,828 registrations. Not bad for a car whose design dates back to 2019 — it holds up well, notably thanks to sales of its electric version. But according to Automobile Magazine, it's not even second this month: the Citroën C3 slips in with 4,302 units, relegating the 208 to third place according to some sources. The hierarchy varies slightly depending on the data agency consulted (NGC-Data vs AAA Data), but the main point is there: three French city cars monopolize the podium.
The Dacia Sandero finishes fourth or fifth depending on the rankings, with 3,766 registrations. A figure down from its usual standards, which partly explains why the C3 was able to return to the podium.
