Zeekr 001 Battery Recall: 38,000 Units Affected in China
Zeekr is recalling more than 38,000 units of its 001 in China following a battery defect that could potentially cause fire. The preventive operation concerns only models equipped with the 86 kWh battery produced between July 2021 and March 2024, while European versions with the 100 kWh battery are unaffected.
"This recall represents nearly a quarter of first-generation Zeekr 001 production, underscoring the scale of the operation" — According to Auto Journal

A Technical Defect With Potentially Serious Consequences
The recall specifically targets the Zeekr 001 WE Edition equipped with an 86 kWh battery manufactured by Sunwoda. The identified issue involves abnormally high internal resistance in cells after prolonged use. This phenomenon first causes a drop in vehicle performance, but can escalate to thermal runaway in the most severe cases.
Thermal runaway is a particularly dangerous chain reaction. Cells overheat uncontrollably, temperature spikes rapidly and can spread to neighboring cells, threatening the entire battery pack. The worst-case scenario remains vehicle fire.
At this stage, no major incidents have been publicly reported by the Chinese manufacturer. The measure is therefore purely preventive in nature, even if the scale of the recall — 38,277 vehicles — raises concerns.
Remote Monitoring to Identify Failing Batteries
To address this problem of this magnitude, Zeekr is leveraging technology. The manufacturer will use its onboard monitoring system to analyze battery data remotely via the cloud. This approach allows precise identification of vehicles with anomalies without requiring all owners to visit dealerships.

Once diagnosis is established, battery replacement will be entirely free for affected owners. This complete coverage represents a significant cost for Zeekr, though supplier Sunwoda should share the financial burden.
What Impact for Europe?
Good news for European drivers: models sold on our continent are not affected. The Zeekr 001 sold in Europe uses a 100 kWh battery with different chemistry, unlike the problematic 86 kWh version.
This technical differentiation between markets illustrates the adaptation strategies Chinese manufacturers employ across regions. For Zeekr, which is preparing its arrival in France in the second quarter of 2026, this distinction helps avoid a trust crisis in its new markets.
A Test of Zeekr's Credibility
This recall comes at a critical moment for Geely's premium brand. Zeekr is multiplying expansion announcements and positioning itself as a serious competitor to Tesla in the high-end electric segment. Transparent and swift crisis management will be crucial for preserving customer confidence, particularly in Europe where the brand is still building recognition.
The manufacturer can nonetheless rely on Geely Group's experience, already present in Europe through Volvo, Polestar, and soon the mainstream Geely Auto brand. This expertise in managing international networks could prove valuable in minimizing the reputational impact of this recall on other markets.
