The market for 7-seat plug-in hybrid family SUVs is accelerating. On one side, MG arrives with its very first model in this category, the S9 PHEV, promising to shake things up with a record electric range. On the other, Peugeot counterattacks by slashing prices on its 5008 PHEV, bringing it under the €42,000 mark.

The MG S9 PHEV arrives with imposing dimensions: 4.98 m long, 1.97 m wide, and 1.78 m high. These measurements immediately place it above direct competitors like the Peugeot 5008 (4.79 m), the Hyundai Santa Fe, or the Kia Sorento.

Under the hood, MG recycles the already proven mechanics from the HS PHEV: a 1.5-liter turbo gasoline engine paired with an electric motor for a combined output of 295 horsepower. The 21.4 kWh battery allows for up to 100 km of range on the WLTP cycle, a record in this segment.

Modularity is one of the major assets of this MG S9. In a 5-seat configuration with the third row folded, the trunk offers 1,052 liters. Even in a 7-seat configuration, it retains 332 liters of cargo space.

What's the Claimed Range?

The MG S9 PHEV claims 100 kilometers of electric range on the WLTP cycle, compared to 91 km for the Peugeot 5008 PHEV. This 9 km difference might seem minor, but it puts the Chinese model at the top of its category.

Peugeot 5008: The Price Counterattack

Facing this offensive, Peugeot isn't standing idly by. The French manufacturer is currently offering a €2,940 discount on its 5008 plug-in hybrid, increased to €3,940 with a trade-in bonus. The family SUV thus drops from €45,190 to €41,250 with a trade-in.

The 5008 PHEV develops 225 horsepower from the combination of a 150 hp gasoline engine and a 125 hp electric motor, all coupled to an e-DCS7 dual-clutch gearbox. Its 17.8 kWh battery allows it to cover 91 km in all-electric mode.

Santa Fe and Sorento: The Koreans in the Race

The Santa Fe bets on a more angular design and a premium interior presentation, while the Sorento plays the versatility card with an attractive equipment-to-price ratio. Both offer electric ranges between 50 and 70 km, significantly less than their European and Chinese rivals.

MG has not yet announced French pricing for its S9 PHEV. In the UK, the model starts around £45,000 in Comfort trim. The Premium version, chosen by 90% of buyers according to British sources, includes heated, ventilated, and massaging seats, a Bose 12-speaker audio system, and wireless charging.
