BMW M Motorsport has transformed its 2025 April Fools' joke into a genuine racing machine: the M3 Touring 24H will take the start of the 2026 24 Hours of Nürburgring. Based on the M4 GT3 EVO, it develops 590 horsepower and will make its competitive debut as soon as next weekend in the Nürburgring Langstrecken-Serie.

"Over 1.6 million views and an unusually high engagement rate for the brand, the teams found themselves facing an awkward question: what if we actually built it?" — BMW M Motorsport

On April 1st, 2025, BMW M Motorsport posted images on its social media of a supposed racing M3 Touring under development. The goal? To make the community smile before moving on. Except the public didn't play along. The reaction exceeded all expectations: over 1 million users reached, 1.6 million views, and record engagement.

💡 Le saviez-vous ?
This M3 Touring 24H recalls the mythical Volvo 850 that raced in the BTCC in the 90s, another improbable estate car that became a cult classic on track.

Faced with this massive enthusiasm, BMW made a surprising decision: to turn the joke into a factory project. Eight months later, the M3 Touring 24H is here, ready to take on the Green Hell.

The M4 GT3's Mechanics in an Estate

Under the hood, no surprises: the M3 Touring 24H adopts the proven architecture of the M4 GT3 EVO. The supercharged inline-six P58 engine delivers 590 horsepower and 700 Nm of torque, transmitted by a six-speed XTrac sequential gearbox. This technical base has proven itself on international circuits.

The engineers kept the dry sump lubrication and dynamic intake from the GT3, ensuring reliability and performance over distance. Only the chassis required adaptations to accommodate the estate bodywork.

The Aerodynamic Challenges of a Racing Estate

Turning an estate into a race car poses specific problems. An estate isn't designed to slice through the air: the roof, which is longer and 32 millimeters higher than the coupe's, creates drag and disrupts airflow to the rear wing.

The adopted solution involves repositioning the M4 GT3's wing via a new swan-neck mount, offset 200 mm rearward and 32 mm upward. This modification allows for an acceptable aerodynamic balance despite the estate's unfavorable silhouette.

When Will It Make Its Racing Debut?

The M3 Touring 24H will make its first competitive laps next weekend as part of the Nürburgring Langstrecken-Serie. A baptism by fire before the main event of the 24 Hours of Nürburgring, scheduled for May 16th and 17th, 2026.

📊 Chiffre clé
The car now measures 5,218 mm in length, approximately 20 cm longer than a standard M4 GT3.

The machine will compete in the SPX class, reserved for prototypes and experimental cars. A logical choice for this unique creation that doesn't fit any existing homologation.

A Livery That Pays Homage to the Fans

BMW hasn't forgotten the peculiar origin of this project. The M3 Touring 24H's livery incorporates some comments left by fans during the famous April Fools' joke. A nod to the community that made this realization possible.

The car also sports the new M Yellow Lights specific to motorsport and a BMW Iconic Glow grille that distinguishes it from other cars on the grid.

⚙️ Point technique
The M3 Touring 24H can be configured as a race taxi with an optional passenger seat for discovery laps.

The Schubert Motorsport team will be tasked with running this atypical machine, with the participation of a Belgian driver whose identity has not yet been revealed.

A Project That Marks History

This M3 Touring 24H represents much more than a simple styling exercise. It materializes a brand's ability to listen to its community and transform a joke into a concrete project. Few manufacturers would have dared to take the step.

The initiative is a reminder that motorsport remains a field of experimentation where audacity can sometimes trump commercial logic. In a context where the industry is going through a difficult period, as illustrated by the impending closure of AC Schnitzer after 39 years of existence, this type of project brings a breath of fresh air.

The M3 Touring 24H may have no commercial future, but it will have marked Nürburgring history as the first racing estate developed by a premium manufacturer in decades.
