The BMW iX3 enters the subscription era with its new pricing strategy. The first model in the Neue Klasse lineup, the electric SUV from the Bavarian marque now starts at €70,900 after a €2,000 increase even before its official March 7th launch. BMW is rolling out on-demand functions across this model, allowing customers to activate already-installed equipment via monthly subscriptions.

"We have elevated all technologies to a completely new level!" — Joachim Post, BMW Development Director

BMW is breathing new life into subscriptions with the iX3, though this time with considerably more finesse. After the resounding failure of paid heated seats in 2022, the Bavarian manufacturer is recalibrating its approach, focusing instead on advanced technologies that require cloud connectivity.

The On-Demand Functions Concept Explained

The iX3 leaves the factory equipped with all hardware installed: cameras, radars, sensors, and connectivity. The concept is elegantly simple—streamline production by manufacturing a single hardware configuration, then let customers activate options through the ConnectedDrive marketplace.

Two primary functionalities operate under this subscription system. The 360° camera remains available as a traditional option, but the Highway Assistant adopts a hybrid model at €994.60. This semi-autonomous driving function permits hands-free operation on certain motorway stretches, though it expires after four years.

Alexandra Landers, BMW's head of product communications, concedes that paid heated seats were "probably not the best way to begin." The manufacturer now reserves subscriptions for services requiring cloud infrastructure costs.

A Price Hike Before Even Reaching Showrooms

The list price for the BMW iX3 50 xDrive has climbed from €68,900 announced at the IAA presentation to €70,900 in the official configurator. This increase occurred mere days before the official commercial launch on March 7th.

This sole variant at launch develops 345 kW (470 horsepower) courtesy of its xDrive all-wheel-drive system. The 108 kWh battery leverages 800 V technology and promises considerable theoretical range. BMW plans to introduce later variants with rear-wheel drive and smaller battery configurations.

The manufacturer has also introduced new options, including the AC-Laden Professional package at €740, which increases alternating current charging from 11 kW to 22 kW. This option encompasses the Vehicle-to-Load function, enabling external devices to be powered up to 3.7 kW.

New Logo and Neue Klasse Design Language

The iX3 inaugurates BMW's subtly revised logo. The internal chrome circle has been retired in favor of a flatter design aligned with current minimalist trends. Oliver Heilmer, head of BMW design, explains: "We wanted to preserve our heritage while bringing greater precision to the logo."

The vehicle measures 4.78 meters long by 1.89 meters wide and 1.63 meters tall. Its vertical orientation and crisp surfaces convey purposeful presence. The BMW dual grille and headlights remain central to the visual identity.

What Embedded Technology?

The Neue Klasse architecture rests on four high-performance computers. The "Heart of Joy" manages drivetrain and driving dynamics through Infineon Aurix TC4D microcontrollers. Three additional processors handle automated driving, infotainment, and base functions.

Infineon also equips the three zone control units supporting the four main computers. This architecture enables management of rapid Ethernet connections via the German manufacturer's Brightlane products.

A Bet on the Future of Automotive Software

BMW is banking on an automotive software market reaching $80 billion by 2030. This strategy aims to offset the reduced mechanical complexity of electric motors through recurring revenue from digital services.

The manufacturer offers a complimentary one-month trial for non-purchased functions. Thereafter, customers may choose between monthly subscription or permanent purchase. This decidedly less aggressive approach than Tesla or BMW's previous attempts should prove considerably more palatable to clientele.

Initial deliveries commenced in late February, even before official order books opened at dealerships. Robust demand confirms the market's anticipation for this inaugural Neue Klasse representative, which marks the beginning of a new era for the Bavarian house.
