BMW iX3 2026: The Electric SUV Dividing Designers
BMW launches its electric revolution with the iX3 Neue Klasse, the first model of a new era for the Bavarian brand. Unveiled in 2026, this electric SUV is already accumulating international awards and debuts cutting-edge technologies, while its i3 sedan will follow in March with record-breaking charging performance.

The iX3 Neue Klasse: An Unprecedented Haul of Trophies
The BMW iX3 Neue Klasse has been collecting awards since its launch. In France, it won first place in the Automobile Awards in the Full Electric category. In the United Kingdom, What Car? awarded it both the Car of the Year 2026 and Premium Electric SUV of the Year titles—a rare double distinction. Top Gear UK followed suit with its own Car of the Year 2026.
In Germany, readers of auto motor und sport placed it at the top of the large SUV category with 14.1% of the votes against 69 competitors. Switzerland and Finland have also crowned the iX3, far exceeding what BMW typically achieves with a single model in such a short time.
This international recognition is explained by a major technological breakthrough. The iX3 debuts the Neue Klasse platform, exclusively dedicated to electric vehicles, with an 800-volt architecture enabling charging up to 400 kW. The 50 xDrive model combines two motors (one per axle) for 469 horsepower and 645 Nm of torque.
A Divisive Design That Leaves a Mark
The iX3's styling is not unanimous, even among former brand insiders. Frank Stephenson, a former BMW designer who worked on the first X5 and the first Mini of the Bavarian era, has been highly critical. According to him, the electric SUV lacks "visual presence" and the fender lines are "visually disturbing."
He particularly criticizes the retro-modern double "kidney" grille, which he describes as "too pinched, almost puckered." The front bumper seems "unnecessarily busy" for an electric vehicle, while the rear appears "a bit generic." Despite these criticisms, Stephenson acknowledges an improvement over the oversized grilles of some recent BMW models.
Mbappé Swaps BMWs: From the i7 to the iX3
Automotive news took an unexpected turn with Kylian Mbappé, who just obtained his Spanish driver's license at 27 years old. The Real Madrid star surprised by ditching his luxurious BMW i7 xDrive 60, priced at €140,000, for a more compact iX3 costing roughly half as much.
This choice is explained by the iX3's more manageable size, perfectly suited for a novice driver. The i7, with its 5.4-meter length and nearly 2-meter width, remains in the garage while Mbappé gets his bearings. In Spain, he must display the "L" badge signaling his novice status for one year.
The Electric i3 Arrives in March with Records in Tow
BMW has confirmed the presentation of its new electric i3 on March 18, 2026. This electric sedan, the first of the Neue Klasse lineage in this segment, will adopt the same powertrain as the iX3: 345 kW (469 hp) and 645 Nm of torque, with an 800-volt architecture and charging up to 400 kW.
Production will start in the second half of 2026. With the same 109 kWh battery pack as the iX3, which offers 805 km of WLTP range, the more aerodynamic sedan could reach 830 to 850 km, far surpassing the Mercedes CLA 250+ EQ and its 792 km.
What Future for the Combustion X3?
While BMW electrifies its lineup, the combustion X3 continues its career with notable improvements. The fourth generation, launched in autumn 2024, introduces the 40d xDrive version with 303 horsepower and 670 Nm of torque. This B57 diesel engine benefits from 48-volt mild hybridization with an 18-horsepower electric motor.
