Alfa Romeo Delays Stelvio and Giulia to 2028

Stellantis and Alfa Romeo have just announced a major delay for the next-generation Stelvio and Giulia, which will no longer arrive in 2025-2026 as planned, but only in 2028. The Italian brand admits that its projects initially designed to be 100% electric no longer match market expectations.
"We're changing our strategy because we previously imagined the brand's future would be exclusively 100% electric. Now we have to change everything and abandon the all-electric approach. We need to reinvent all the platforms and their electronics." — Santo Ficili, CEO of Alfa Romeo
A rare admission of strategic failure in the industry
This decision is a textbook case in modern automotive. Alfa Romeo acknowledges developing its future models with an exclusively electric approach, without planning thermal or hybrid alternatives. A strategy that aligns perfectly with Stellantis' reversal on electric vehicles—the group has just announced €22 billion in exceptional charges partly tied to this transition.
The current Stelvio and Giulia boast unusual longevity. The SUV, which competes with the Audi Q5 and BMW X3, dates from 2016, while the sedan goes back to 2015. While German rivals have already refreshed their models twice, Alfa Romeo continues banking on vehicles whose technical foundation is approaching a decade old.
Models that hold their own despite their age
Paradoxically, this inertia hasn't prevented the brand from advancing in Europe, with sales up 30.5% according to the ACEA. Yet this success masks the industrial urgency facing technologically superior competitors.
Stellantis' original plans, drawn up under Carlos Tavares, called for replacing the Stelvio last year and launching a new Giulia in 2026. The group had already admitted an initial delay, attributed to the need to redirect projects toward a stronger thermal offering.
What engines for the future models?
The powertrain question remains wide open. Will the upcoming Stelvio and Giulia get the 6-cylinder turbocharged Hurricane inline engine, currently reserved for Stellantis models sold in the United States? Is this engine compatible with European regulations, or will market-specific powertrains need developing for Europe?
At this stage, no official answer has been provided, which deepens the uncertainty surrounding the future lineup. This hesitation illustrates the group's strategic doubts facing an unpredictable European automotive market.
A delicate industrial transition
Cassino plant, responsible for producing both vehicles, was supposed to quickly pivot to manufacturing the new electric generations. Keeping current models in production secures employment stability and phases the industrial transition.
To sustain the lineup through 2027, certain engines will need adapting to Euro 6e bis standards. These technical modifications represent a costly challenge for Alfa Romeo, which must also manage its existing fleet's complexity, particularly after a recent recall campaign on certain Stelvio and Giulia units built between 2019 and 2020.
Limited editions to keep customers waiting
Meanwhile, Alfa Romeo is banking on exclusivity with the Giulia Quadrifoglio Luna Rossa, unveiled at the 2026 Brussels Motor Show. This ultra-limited run of just 10 units already sold features an aerodynamic kit inspired by the Luna Rossa AC75 sailing yacht. It generates 140 kg of downforce at 300 km/h—five times more than the standard version.
This strategy keeps the brand in the media spotlight with its 2.9-liter twin-turbocharged V6 producing 520 horsepower, while preparing for the belated arrival of new models. An approach that leaves Alfa Romeo in a precarious position against rivals refreshing their lineups at a steady pace.
The 2028 delay represents a considerable window in a premium segment where technology evolves rapidly. Alfa Romeo is playing for high stakes in this complex transition—repositioning strategy, complete technical overhaul, and preserving its Italian sporting identity all at once.
