Renault Acquires Full Stake in Flexis EV Van Venture

Renault has acquired full ownership of Flexis, the joint venture created with Volvo and CMA CGM in 2024 to develop electric light commercial vehicles. The French manufacturer is acquiring the 55% stake held by its partners, though Volvo remains associated with the project. Subject to regulatory approvals, this operation aims to accelerate the commercialization of the next generation of electric light commercial vehicles.

A Buyout That Ends Partner Tensions
After weeks of speculation, Renault has officially announced the complete acquisition of Flexis. The joint venture, launched in 2024, initially brought together three shareholders: Renault and Volvo with 45% each, and Marseille-based shipper CMA CGM with 10%.
According to Le Monde, which revealed the story in mid-February, relations soured following the appointment of François Provost as CEO of the Renault group. Tensions reached a critical point, forcing Flexis management to seek intervention from the Nanterre commercial court and request the appointment of a mediator.

Volvo Stays in the Race Despite the Stake Sale
Despite ceding its stake, Volvo does not disappear entirely from the project. The Swedish manufacturer retains the role of "key strategic partner" according to the agreement's terms. This cooperation allows technical expertise developed since the joint venture's launch to be maintained.
Distribution will be handled by Renault Trucks, the French group's subsidiary specializing in heavy goods vehicles. This division of labor aims to optimize the existing commercial network while capitalizing on Renault's light commercial vehicle expertise.
Connected Electric Vans to Conquer Urban Logistics
Flexis is developing a complete range of connected electric light commercial vehicles intended for urban delivery. The project fits within Renault's strategy to strengthen its position in the electric commercial vehicle segment, facing growing competition.
The first Flexis models will integrate the latest connectivity and route optimization technologies. The objective: reduce operating costs while complying with new environmental regulations in major European city centers.
What Did Renault Pay?
The acquisition amount has not been disclosed in official communications. Renault is acquiring the 55% held by Volvo and CMA CGM, but financial terms remain confidential. The operation remains subject to competition authority approvals.
Accelerating the Commercial Timeline
With this buyout, Renault hopes to accelerate development and industrialization of future Flexis vans. Simplified governance should enable faster decision-making and optimized market entry.
The agreement calls for "complete finalization of development and industrialization of the next generation of fully electric light commercial vehicles." Wording that suggests the first production models are not far off.
Flexis vehicles will complement Renault's current offering, which already includes electric versions of the Kangoo and Master. This multi-brand strategy aims to cover all urban and peri-urban logistics needs.
