The Hyundai Tucson is facing a fresh legal battle with a class action lawsuit in the United States accusing its driver assistance system of triggering phantom braking. Meanwhile, aggressive pricing on the European market is drawing attention, with discounts reaching €12,000, while a radically redesigned new generation looms for 2027.

"Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist can brake unexpectedly even when the road is completely clear" — 2025 Hyundai Tucson Owner's Manual

A Lawsuit That Won't Go Away

The Hyundai Tucson finds itself at the center of a legal firestorm in the United States. Dennis Sperling filed a class action lawsuit in California federal court, accusing the SUV's forward collision prevention system of triggering phantom braking while driving.

According to the complaint, these unwarranted emergency stops happen with no visible obstacles on the road. The owner claims Hyundai rushed the system to market despite knowing about its failures. While no direct accidents have been reported, these sudden braking incidents pose a real danger to other road users.

💡 Did you know?
The Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist system uses cameras and radar to detect obstacles, but can sometimes mistake environmental elements for actual hazards.

The 2025 Tucson owner's manual actually acknowledges these potential malfunctions, stating the system "can brake unexpectedly." This transparency in the documentation could ironically backfire against the Korean automaker in this legal affair.

Prices That Break the Market

While American courts grapple with the case, Europe is enjoying particularly aggressive discounts. In Germany, AutoBild reports a used Tucson Plug-in Hybrid at €24,900 with just 64,741 kilometers on the odometer. A steal for an SUV that delivers 265 horsepower in plug-in hybrid form.

New models are no exception. Through the Carwow platform, German dealerships are slashing prices with up to €12,361 in rebates on the N Line X 1.6 T-GDI 215-horsepower version. The base Tucson even starts at €27,828 instead of €35,740 list price.

This price war extends to Spain where Motor.es reports €6,000 discounts on Klass trim levels. Enough to rattle Chinese competitors who banked on their pricing advantage.

💡 Key figure
Nearly 20,000 Tucsons were sold in France in 2025, placing the Korean SUV in the country's top 10 sales rankings.

Reliability Under the Microscope

Do these attractive prices mask deeper problems? Beyond the phantom braking, some French owners report malfunctions on the plug-in hybrid versions. The charging system occasionally acts up, and a few electrical glitches have been flagged on early model years.

How Reliable Is the Tucson Plug-in Hybrid?

Real-world feedback shows mixed results. While the proven 1.6 T-GDI petrol engine has a solid track record over several years, integrating the electrical components sometimes creates software bugs. Hyundai has rolled out multiple over-the-air updates to iron out these growing pains.

The extended warranty covering 8 years in France speaks to the manufacturer's confidence in its tech. But this commercial generosity raises questions: is this genuine quality assurance or a strategy to reassure gun-shy customers?

A New Generation on the Horizon

2027 will mark a turning point for the Tucson with a complete design overhaul. Early camouflaged prototypes hint at a squarer, more robust silhouette, drawing inspiration from the Crater concept unveiled by Hyundai.
