Global Recall: 104,000 Hyundai Kona Electric Models for Fire Risk

Over 104,000 first-generation Hyundai Kona Electric vehicles must visit a workshop for a software update to their battery management system. This global recall campaign affects vehicles produced between January 2018 and July 2023, due to a fire risk linked to a thermal detection failure.
"The high-voltage battery may exhibit thermal instability not detected in time by the faulty software, significantly increasing the risk of fire" — KBA database (German Federal Motor Transport Authority)
A Software Problem with Serious Consequences
The recall targets Kona Electric models manufactured between January 24, 2018 and July 15, 2023. According to the German KBA authority, the battery monitoring software fails to detect thermal instability within the high-voltage pack early enough. This failure increases the risk of overheating and potential fire.
The solution implemented by Hyundai consists of an update to the Battery Management System (BMS) software. This new version integrates an enhanced monitoring function, capable of detecting voltage discrepancies between individual cells in the high-voltage battery earlier.
Only the First Generation Affected
This campaign only affects the first-generation Kona Electric. The new model, launched in October 2023, uses different batteries and is not subject to this recall. The affected production period - nearly 5 and a half years - explains the high number of vehicles involved.
The workshop intervention is generally limited to installing the software update. However, in specific cases, Hyundai will proceed with a complete replacement of the high-voltage battery as a precautionary measure, particularly if anomalies have already been detected.
What About the French Market for This Recall?
According to sources consulted, France does not appear to be directly affected by this recall campaign. Germany accounts for 13,523 vehicles, the highest European proportion mentioned in official databases.

This situation recalls the precedent from 2020, when Hyundai had already recalled more than 25,000 Kona Electric vehicles in South Korea. At that time, the problem involved defective battery cells supplied by LG Chem (now LG Energy Solution). The measures also included a software update and battery replacements in problematic cases.
A Preventive Reaction from the Manufacturer
Hyundai is acting preventively before serious incidents occur. This approach contrasts with other manufacturers who sometimes wait for proven problems to manifest. The free-of-charge intervention at dealerships aims to eliminate any risk before it materializes.

The Korean brand confirms that the vast majority of interventions will be resolved by the simple software update, an operation that generally takes less than an hour in the workshop. Only vehicles already showing detected anomalies will require a battery replacement.
What Are the Consequences for Owners?
Affected owners will receive an official notification from Hyundai to schedule an appointment at an authorized center. The intervention, entirely free, does not require prolonged immobilization of the vehicle for the standard software update.
This campaign illustrates the technical challenges involved in monitoring high-voltage batteries in electric vehicles. Despite these complications, Hyundai maintains its electrification strategy with new models like the IONIQ 5 and IONIQ 6 which use newer battery technologies.
[FAQ]Which Kona Electric models are affected?
Only first-generation Kona Electric models produced between January 24, 2018, and July 15, 2023, are targeted by this recall. The new generation launched in October 2023 is not affected.
Is the intervention free?
No, the software update or battery replacement is completely free and covered by Hyundai at its authorized centers.
How long does the intervention take?
For the majority of cases requiring only the software update, the operation takes less
