Hyundai is withdrawing the Ioniq 6 from the North American market after just three years. The Korean automaker is stopping imports of its electric sedan to the United States starting in 2026, keeping only the high-performance N version in limited quantities. A decision driven by weak sales and tariff pressures.

"We sold only 573 units of Ioniq 6 in the first two months of 2025, compared to over 5,000 Ioniq 5s" — Edmunds

A sedan that never found its audience

The Ioniq 6 had everything going for it. Launched in 2023 on the American market, this electric sedan boasted remarkable performance: among the best range on the market and ultra-fast charging. But the sales figures tell a different story.

Hyundai sold only 10,000 units of the Ioniq 6 in the United States in 2024, a drop of 15% compared to the previous year. A stinging failure compared to the success of its cousin, the Ioniq 5, which regularly exceeds 5,000 sales per month. This difference illustrates a broader problem: electric sedans are struggling to convince an American market obsessed with SUVs.

💡 Key Figure
The Ioniq 6 represented less than 1% of total electric vehicle sales in the United States in 2024.

Tariffs deliver the final blow

The Ioniq 6's South Korean production works against it. Unlike the Ioniq 5 and future Ioniq 9 assembled at the Metaplant America plant in Georgia, the sedan is hit hard by import tariffs. A situation that increases its final price and complicates its commercialization.

Hyundai Canada confirms that no Ioniq 6 2026 model year vehicles will be imported. The automaker prefers to clear its 2025 inventory before the arrival of the refreshed version planned for 2027.

The Ioniq 6 N saves the day

The only bright spot in this gloomy picture: the Ioniq 6 N escapes this fate. This souped-up version with 641 horsepower will continue to be imported in limited quantities. With its 740 Nm of torque and 0-100 km/h in 3.4 seconds, it targets a restricted but passionate clientele.

The N has solid technical credentials: specific driving modes, adaptive suspension, and even an N e-Shift function that simulates gear changes. Enough to appeal to thrill-seekers, even if volumes remain limited.

💡 Technical Point
The Ioniq 6 N can charge from 10 to 80% in just 18 minutes thanks to its 235 kW charging capacity.

When will the new version arrive?

The 2026 refresh of the Ioniq 6 brings notable aesthetic changes, including new slimmer headlights. But this modernized version will only arrive in Canada in 2027, after current inventory is cleared. In the United States, the discontinuation is permanent for standard versions.

This decision follows brutal economic logic. Electric sedans represent less than 5% of the American electric market, dominated by SUVs and crossovers. Even Tesla struggles with its segment.
