BMW is preparing an all-wheel-drive version of its M2 for 2027, marking a watershed moment for a model that has remained exclusively rear-wheel-drive until now. This M2 xDrive joins its larger siblings M3 and M4 in offering four-wheel traction, responding to growing customer demand for greater versatility and usable performance.

The news leaked accidentally via BMW's American website, which briefly displayed its 2027 lineup before removing the page. Among the models listed was the M2 xDrive, confirming rumors that had been circulating for months in Munich's corridors.

All-Wheel Drive to Democratize Performance

This M2 xDrive will retain the same S58 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged engine as the rear-drive version, developing somewhere between 480 and 523 horsepower. The difference lies in the all-wheel-drive system that will allow this power to be harnessed in all weather conditions.

💡 Did You Know?
The BMW M2 was until now the only full-fat BMW M available exclusively in rear-wheel-drive, continuing the heritage of the original M3.

Like the M3 and M4 xDrive, the system will be configurable with different driving modes, including a "RWD" option to recover rear-drive behavior on track. This flexibility satisfies both purists and those seeking maximum efficiency.

Automatic Transmission Only for xDrive Version

The M2 xDrive will be exclusively offered with the 8-speed automatic transmission, following the logic applied to other all-wheel-drive M models. Manual transmission enthusiasts will need to stick with the rear-drive version, which retains its 6-speed manual.

This strategy allows BMW to clearly segment its offer: on one side the "purist" M2 with manual transmission and rear-wheel-drive, on the other the "performance" M2 with automatic and all-wheel-drive.

Increased Weight but Optimized Performance

According to early estimates, the M2 xDrive should weigh approximately 3,970 pounds (1,800 kg), roughly 90 kg more than the rear-drive version. This surplus comes primarily from the all-wheel-drive system and front drive shafts.

💡 Key Figure
The current BMW M2 CS develops 523 horsepower and achieves 0-100 km/h in 3.7 seconds according to Car and Driver.

Despite this weight penalty, performance should improve thanks to better traction. The 0-100 km/h sprint could drop below 3.5 seconds, rivaling considerably more expensive sports cars.

The M2 CS Continues Evolving in Parallel

While awaiting the arrival of the xDrive version, BMW continues developing the current M2 CS. A new Track Kit has just been unveiled with an adjustable rear wing inspired by racing M4 GT3 and GT4 models.

The kit also includes an adjustable front splitter, four-way adjustable dampers, and the ability to lower the chassis by 20 mm. The German price stands at €23,500, roughly £20,600.

When Will This M2 xDrive Arrive?

Production of the BMW M2 xDrive should commence in August 2026 for a launch as a 2027 model. First deliveries are expected in autumn 2026 on the American market, then early 2027 in Europe.

💡 Technical Point
BMW's xDrive system can distribute torque from 0% to 100% between front and rear axles depending on conditions and selected mode.

Pricing has not yet been announced, but a premium of €3,000 to €5,000 compared to the rear-drive version seems likely, aligning the M2 xDrive with the pricing strategy of the M3 and M4.

A Controversial Yet Logical Evolution

The arrival of this all-wheel-drive system divides purists who see it as a betrayal of BMW M DNA. For them, the M2 represented the last bastion of pure rear-wheel-drive, a direct heir to the original M3s.

But BMW is ultimately responding to market demand. Customers seek high-performance sports cars that remain usable in daily life, including winter conditions. All-wheel-drive considerably expands the M2's scope of use.
