Subaru E-Outback Electric: The Adventure Wagon Returns

Subaru has launched production of the E-Outback electric in its historic Yajima plant in Japan, thirty years after the first model. This 100% electric adventure wagon develops 381 horsepower and promises 523 kilometers of range for 52,990 euros.
"We are selling E-Outbacks made in the same factory as the first Outback from 1995, it's a powerful symbol of continuity" — Subaru Europe Spokesperson
The Electric Rebirth of an Icon
Subaru is betting big on the E-Outback to revive its disastrous European sales. With only 22 units sold in France in 2025 and 56 in the Netherlands, the Japanese brand is staking its survival on this new electric model that retains the adventurous DNA of the legendary wagon.
The E-Outback shares its technical base with the Toyota bZ4X Touring but is distinguished by its specific Subaru tuning. Unlike the Solterra and Uncharted developed by Toyota, this model is entirely designed by Subaru engineers in the Yajima plant, the very place where the first Outback was born three decades ago.
381 Horsepower for Electric Adventure
Under the hood, the E-Outback packs a dual-motor setup developing 381 horsepower (280 kW) thanks to an electric motor on each axle. This configuration guarantees permanent all-wheel drive, a historic hallmark of Subaru. The 0 to 100 km/h sprint takes 4.5 seconds, a performance that would embarrass many gas-powered sports cars.
📋 Fiche technique
The 74.7 kWh battery offers a range of 523 kilometers according to the WLTP cycle. With fast charging, it can go from 10 to 80% in 28 minutes thanks to a 150 kW power rating. The onboard 22 kW charger allows for a full charge at home in under four hours.
An Aggressive Price to Reconquer Europe
Priced at 52,990 euros in France, the E-Outback positions itself 25,000 euros cheaper than the old gas-powered Outback which exceeded 70,000 euros. This aggressive strategy aims to win back a European clientele that had deserted the brand in the face of the prohibitive prices of previous models.
Subaru is targeting between 300 and 500 registrations in France for 2026, then 1,500 to 2,000 units in 2027. The E-Outback is expected to represent a significant share of these volumes alongside the Uncharted, which should account for 50% of sales according to the brand's French strategy.
Off-Road Technologies Preserved
The Japanese manufacturer hasn't forgotten the fundamentals of the Outback. The X-Mode system offers two specialized modes: Snow/Dirt for slippery surfaces and Deep Snow/Mud for extreme terrain. The Grip Control acts as an off-road cruise control between 2 and 10 km/h.
When Will It Be Available?
The first deliveries of the E-Outback will arrive at French dealerships in June 2026. Production officially began at the Yajima plant in Japan in March 2026, marking a symbolic return to the roots for this seventh generation of Outback.
The trunk offers 633 liters of capacity, a decent volume for a wagon of this size. The towing capacity reaches 1,500 kg, allowing it to haul caravans and trailers like its gas-powered predecessors.
