The new Mercedes VLE replaces the EQV with ambitious technical promises: up to 700 km range, rapid charging in 15 minutes, and power ranging from 276 to 413 horsepower. This premium electric van will inaugurate Mercedes' new Van Architecture platform and position itself in the "Grand Limousine" category starting in 2026.

"With over 700 kilometers of range and 320 kW rapid charging power, the VLE even outperforms our current electric SUVs" — Thomas Klein, Director Mercedes-Benz Vans

Mercedes is launching the VLE to replace the EQV in an electric van market that's still struggling to take off. The numbers speak for themselves: only 8% of vans sold by Mercedes in 2025 were electric. In other words, there's plenty of room for growth.

700 km range: on paper and on the road?

The Mercedes VLE claims over 700 km WLTP range thanks to its 115 kWh battery. A figure that puts this van on par with an EQS—impressive for a 2.5-tonne vehicle. (In the real world, expect 550-600 km in mixed conditions, 450 km on the highway in cold weather.)

Rapid charging claims 320 kW maximum power with 355 km of range recovered in 15 minutes. This performance, made possible by the 800-volt architecture, places the VLE at the technical forefront. The real question is how long this power output is maintained: typically, charging curves drop sharply after the first 20% (though Mercedes has learned from its EQS mistakes).

💡 Key figure
Mercedes sold 28,500 electric vans in 2025, a 46% increase over 2024, but this still represents only 8% of its total van sales.

A design that finally embraces its own identity

The VLE abandons current Mercedes styling codes for a retro-futuristic hexagonal grille. This stylistic break was necessary: the EQV looked too much like a V-Class wearing a disguise. Here, there's a genuine aesthetic statement.

Daytime running lights shaped like the Mercedes star and wheels up to 22 inches give it considerable presence. The backlit grille is more gimmick than innovation, but the overall package works better than expected in photos.

Three powertrains: competent to muscular

Mercedes offers three power outputs for the VLE: 276 horsepower (203 kW) as entry-level, then more powerful versions topping out at 413 horsepower. This tiered lineup covers different use cases: large families, hotel shuttles, or VIP transport.

💡 Technical note
The 800V Van Architecture platform enables more efficient charging and reduces wait times thanks to doubled electrical voltage compared to standard 400V systems.

The MBUX Rear Space Experience system transforms the rear into a mobile lounge on top-tier trims. Mercedes is clearly targeting customers who use their van as a limousine rather than a utility vehicle. The "Grand Limousine" positioning then becomes coherent.

Availability 2026: timing the comeback

The Mercedes VLE arrives in the second half of 2026 in Europe. Tight timing for Mercedes, which must catch up with Chinese manufacturers already present in this premium segment.

On pricing, Mercedes stays silent—but the "Grand Limousine" positioning speaks volumes: expect well above the €75,000 of the previous EQV. A premium strategy, unapologetically, against Chinese competition playing the volume game.

Reality check against Chinese competition

With 359,000 vans sold in 2025, of which only 28,500 electric, Mercedes-Benz Vans has its credibility on the line. The VLE must prove you can build a premium electric van without technical compromise.

💡 Did you know?
Unlike commercial vans, which often settle for 300 km range, private customers demand the same performance as a passenger car—hence the VLE's 700 km range.

The VLE's advantage over the old EQV? Purpose-built electric architecture instead of a retrofit on a thermal base. Interior space and energy efficiency logically improve as a result.

The real question remains final pricing. Against Chinese brands already offering electric vans in this segment, Mercedes must justify its premium positioning with substance, not just badges.
