Mercedes launches the VLE 2028, its new premium electric minivan replacing the Class V. With an announced autonomy of 700 km, two electric powertrains rated at 268 and 409 horsepower, and an unprecedented 800V platform, this rolling lounge targets wealthy families and high-end shuttle services. The first model on the new VAN.EA architecture will hit the market starting Q2 2026.

"Over 700 km of range thanks to an NMC battery of 115 kWh and a particularly efficient electric motor" — Mercedes-Benz

A new platform for a new segment

The VLE (which doesn't mean anything in particular—Mercedes apparently exhausted its logical letter combinations) inaugurates the brand's modular VAN.EA platform. This 800V architecture promises rapid charging: 15 minutes to recover 320 km of range on a DC charger. In the real world, expect more like 25-30 minutes if you find a functioning charger actually delivering 300 kW.

At 5.31 meters long, 1.99 m wide, and 1.94 m tall, the VLE surpasses typical family SUV dimensions. Basically, it's an electrified Class V with respectable specs across the board.

💡 Key figure
The VLE boasts a drag coefficient of just 0.25, remarkable for a vehicle of this size and shape.

Mercedes offers two versions at launch: the VLE300 with 268 horsepower in rear-wheel drive and the VLE400 4MATIC with 409 horsepower in all-wheel drive. The more powerful version claims 0 to 100 km/h in 6.5 seconds—respectable for hauling mother-in-law and vacation luggage, but we're waiting to see real-world numbers under load.

Design that bets on aerodynamics

The VLE's exterior breaks from the sobriety of Mercedes' previous utility vehicles. The imposing vertical grille dominates the front fascia—necessary to cool... what exactly on an electric vehicle? The LED headlights feature three-pointed star signature lighting, just in case you forget this is a Mercedes.

The AMG Line package adds questionable sportiness with redesigned bumpers and glossy black trim. Wheels run from 19 to 22 inches—the 22s being perfect for decimating your range and tire budget. Flush-fitting door handles and electric sliding doors complete a coherent tech package, though one wonders what happens when the 12V battery dies.

The cabin: a true rolling lounge

Mercedes has indeed pampered the VLE's interior like a Class S. The optional MBUX Superscreen comprises three displays: a 10.25-inch instrument cluster, a central 14-inch screen, and a 14-inch front-passenger unit. The 31.3-inch rear screen that deploys from the ceiling impresses on paper (8K-compatible, split-screen capable), but what about long-term reliability of this complex mechanism?

💡 Did you know?
The Burmester 3D sound system packs 22 speakers for total audio immersion.

Second-row captain's seats feature massage functions, deployable footrests, and integrated headrest pillows. The third row accommodates either a 60/40 bench or two electrically collapsible individual seats. All told, the VLE carries up to 8 passengers—theoretically, since real third-row space for adults of normal stature remains to be verified.

Reality check: what's the actual range?

The VLE packs a 115 kWh NMC battery promising over 700 km of WLTP range. On paper, that's seductive. In the real world, with 8 passengers, climate control, and cruising at 130 km/h on the highway, expect closer to 500 km. In winter with heat cranked, you're probably dropping to around 400 km. DC charging hits 300 kW peak—for a few minutes, before dropping along the usual curve.

Cutting-edge technologies

The AIRMATIC air suspension adjusts ride height by 1.5 inches (roughly 4 cm) up or down. Handy for loading luggage, less so for long-term reliability (Mercedes air suspensions have their quirks past 100,000 km). The rear-axle steering, capable of angling up to 7 degrees, brings the turning radius down to 10.9 meters—a respectable figure for this vehicle size.

💡 Technical point
The 800V architecture enables not only faster charging but also improved powertrain energy efficiency.

The Sky View panoramic glass roof and ambient lighting create a premium atmosphere. Multiple storage spaces—some with heating and cooling functions—dot the cabin. Cup holders deploy from the armrests—a nice detail, but how many mechanisms are destined to break?
