Audi Q9 2026: Giant SUV Replaces A8 as Flagship

Audi is pulling out all the stops for 2026: the Q9, its biggest SUV ever built, lands this year to take over from the A8 as the brand's new flagship, while a mysterious all-terrain electric SUV is lurking in the wings ready to take on the Mercedes G-Class and the Land Rover Defender. These two models mark a major strategic turning point for the four-ringed brand.
"The Audi Q9 will be the new flagship of the Audi portfolio. It's a particularly important model for the United States" — Gernot Döllner, CEO Audi
The Q9 Takes Over from the A8
The Q9 lands this year with a crystal-clear mission: become Audi's new tech showcase after the A8 bows out of production. This over-5-meter beast sits above the Q7 and bet the farm on rear-passenger comfort.

Unlike your typical family SUVs, the Q9 leans hard into limousine territory with two possible configurations: traditional seven seats or six individual luxury seats at the back that wouldn't be out of place in first class. This approach is laser-focused on American, Chinese, and Middle Eastern markets where this kind of hardware absolutely sells.
The SUV rides on a stretched version of the Volkswagen Group's PPC (Premium Platform Combustion) platform. Spy shots reveal a massive hood and an oversized grille that leaves zero doubt about its premium ambitions.
What Engine for the Q9?
Technical details are still under wraps, but Audi should roll out several engines including a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 for the SQ9 version. This mill already powers several Group flagships and typically kicks out more than 450 horsepower.
Assembly will happen in Slovakia, at the Bratislava plant that already produces several Group premium models. This location helps keep costs in check while maintaining German quality standards.
A Rugged Electric SUV on the Horizon
More mysterious but equally thrilling, Audi is cooking up an all-terrain electric SUV that could rewrite the rulebook. CEO Gernot Döllner didn't deny its existence during the brand's annual conference, saying Audi "can do everything, from entry-level electric vehicles to sports cars to rugged SUVs".
This project makes even more sense when you realize that JLR's former head of design, Massimo Frascella — the guy who worked on the Defender — just joined Audi. His hire is fueling speculation about this future electric model capable of going toe-to-toe with the segment's heavyweights.
When Will These New SUVs Hit the Road?
The Q9 should get its official debut in the coming months for sales before the end of 2026. First deliveries should roll out in early 2027 with starting prices estimated around €80,000 for entry-level versions.

The all-terrain electric SUV? That's hazier. Audi is talking development in progress without setting any firm timeline. A reveal could come late 2026 or early 2027, with sales probably pushed to 2028.
An American-First Strategy
This SUV offensive fits Audi's new playbook of developing products tailored to specific markets. The Q9 will actually be Audi's first model to launch in America first before rolling into Europe.
"We really listened to what American customers want, and for the first time, it will launch first in the United States, which shows our ambitions there," Döllner explains.
This approach breaks with Audi's traditional strategy that treated Europe as its home base. The American market's economic clout and appetite for big SUVs explain this course correction.
Competition Already Heating Up
In the XXL luxury segment, the Q9 will face some well-entrenched rivals. The BMW X7 currently dominates this niche with more than 40,000 global sales annually, followed by the Mercedes GLS with its more traditional approach.
Audi's edge lies in its tech positioning and ability to serve up more innovative interiors than its Bavarian and Swabian rivals. The Virtual Cockpit and latest-gen MMI interface are serious trump cards.
