Audi has inadvertently confirmed on LinkedIn the arrival of the RS5 plug-in hybrid in 2026. This will be the first RS model to adopt this technology in the history of the German marque. The car is expected to retain a V6 engine coupled with an electric system to exceed 500 horsepower.

"The new Audi RS5 becomes our first plug-in hybrid sports car and will make its debut this year" — Audi AG on LinkedIn

Audi's marketing mishap delighted enthusiasts. On January 28th, the four-ring brand accidentally published a LinkedIn post confirming the arrival of the RS5 plug-in hybrid in 2026. The post, quickly removed, revealed what will be a major turning point for the Audi Sport division.

This third-generation RS5 will mark a first in the marque's history: no RS model had previously adopted plug-in hybrid technology. The Ingolstadt constructor thus breaks a tradition of purely combustion engines on its most refined sports cars.

A V6 That Refuses Downsizing

Contrary to the general market trend, the future RS5 should not succumb to downsizing temptations. Audi Sport's executives have consistently rejected four-cylinder engines on RS models, and the iconic five-cylinder appears condemned by emissions standards.

The powerplant would thus revolve around the 2.9-liter twin-turbo V6, already present on the current S5 with 367 horsepower. The addition of the plug-in hybrid system should boost total output beyond 500 horsepower, representing a substantial gain over the 444 horsepower of the previous RS5.

The Weight Challenge

Hybridization nevertheless poses a problem of considerable proportions: weight. The current S5 liftback already tips the scales at 1,950 kg on the European scale, some 155 kilos heavier than the old S4 diesel it replaces. In Avant trim, weight climbs to 1,965 kg.

The "standard" A5 Avant plug-in hybrid already exceeds 2,000 kg with its four-cylinder engine. The RS5, with its V6 and more substantial battery, could well approach 2,100 kg. A distinct handicap against rivals like the BMW M3 Competition (1,730 kg) or the outgoing Audi RS4 (1,715 kg).

What Electric Range?

Battery capacity remains confidential. The standard A5 PHEV carries a 20.7 kWh usable energy pack, but the RS5 could adopt a larger battery to compensate for the biturbo V6's consumption.

Electric range should hover between 50 and 70 kilometers, according to current premium plug-in hybrid standards. Sufficient for urban trips, less so for track excursions.

Available Body Styles

Audi has confirmed that the RS5 will be available in two body styles: liftback and Avant wagon. No convertible version planned, the marque having abandoned this segment on its mid-range sports cars.

This decision fits Audi's rationalization strategy, progressively merging the A4 and A5 ranges while awaiting the A4 e-tron electric model.

When Will It Arrive?

First deliveries are expected during 2026. Audi hasn't specified whether sales would begin in the first or second half, but prototypes have already been spotted on the Nürburgring in May 2025.

Price hasn't been announced, but expect positioning above the previous RS5, which started at €85,000. Plug-in hybrid technology and inflation could push the starting figure toward €95,000 minimum.

This RS5 plug-in hybrid promises to be a pivotal model for Audi Sport, which must reconcile performance with increasingly stringent environmental regulations.
