Toyota and Chinese robotaxi specialist Pony.ai are launching mass production of the bZ4X robotaxi at the GAC Toyota plant in Guangzhou. More than 1,000 units equipped with level 4 autonomous driving technology will join commercial fleets this year across four major Chinese cities: Guangzhou, Beijing, Shanghai, and Shenzhen.

A partnership taking shape four years after the investment

The alliance between Toyota and Pony.ai isn't new. Back in 2020, the Japanese automaker placed a big bet, investing 400 million dollars in the Chinese autonomous vehicle startup. This winning strategy is now paying off with the production launch of a robotaxi based on the bZ4X, Toyota's first electric SUV.

Production isn't happening at Japan's Motomachi plant where the global bZ4X rolls off the line, but in China through the GAC Toyota joint venture based in Guangzhou. This location lets them respond directly to China's needs—the world's leading market for autonomous vehicles.

The bZ4X robotaxi: 34 sensors for complete autonomy

The vehicles keep the standard bZ4X tech specs: 163 kW (222 hp) in the base version, battery of 57.7 kWh or 73.1 kWh depending on variants, and up to 569 km of WLTP range. But the real difference is in the tech package: 34 sensors including 14 cameras for the robotaxi version.

Pony.ai's seventh-generation autonomous driving system equips these vehicles. This level 4 technology enables fully automated driving under defined conditions, with zero driver intervention. The components meet automotive standards and production costs have been optimized compared to earlier generations.

What's the rollout strategy in China?

Deployment will happen gradually across the four major Chinese cities through the PonyPilot+ platform. These metros represent an ideal test market with developed infrastructure and dense urban traffic. The goal: grow Pony.ai's total fleet to over 3,000 vehicles by end of 2026.

This production marks a significant milestone for Toyota in its China EV strategy. The automaker is catching up in a market where local brands dominate the electric and autonomous vehicle segment.

Technical upgrades to the bZ4X that are paying dividends

The bZ4X used for this robotaxi application benefits from the latest improvements rolled out during the summer 2025 update. The e-axles have been revised and the power electronics now integrate silicon carbide (SiC) semiconductors for better energy efficiency.

These technical optimizations arrive at just the right time as the European bZ4X struggles to convince against the competition from electric SUVs. In China, this robotaxi version could restore the model's image while opening new commercial opportunities.

The rise of Chinese robotaxis

This partnership fits into the global race for autonomous vehicles where China is pulling way ahead. Pony.ai is among the leaders alongside Baidu Apollo and AutoX in this booming sector. Chinese authorities are pushing these developments with regulations friendly to testing and commercial rollout.

For Toyota, this alliance is a way to quickly access this tech expertise without building the entire autonomous chain in-house. The brand can focus on the reliability of its electric vehicles while benefiting from its partner's software advances.

A business model still to be proven

While the technology looks mature, the profitability of robotaxi fleets remains unproven. The costs of developing and maintaining autonomous systems represent massive investments. This production of over 1,000 units is a real-world test to validate the business model.

The China experience will likely serve as a reference for potential rollouts in other markets. Toyota and Pony.ai are closely watching usage feedback before considering geographic expansion of their partnership.

This production launch marks another step in Toyota's transformation toward electric and autonomous mobility. Time will tell if this China strategy lets the automaker catch up with American and European pioneers in the sector.
